Cell-intrinsic and environmental sources of mutations in cancer
The laboratory of Mia Petljak, PhD at NYU Grossman School of Medicine )
is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join a multidisciplinary team investigating the cell-
intrinsic and environmental causes of somatic mutations in human tissues, as well as their
impact on cancer development and evolution. Building upon our foundational work (Cell,
2019; Nature, 2023; Nature Genetics, 2023), our team leverages mutational signatures,
distinct genomic imprints left by individual mutagens on human genomes, to identify and
characterize individual mutagenic sources. Through this approach, we aim to discover
processes that cause and fuel cancer evolution, as well as aid in the development of
innovative preventative and therapeutic strategies to prevent and treat it.
As a successful candidate, you will lead a project looking into the sources, exposure
biomarkers and/or functional impact of the suspected or poorly defined cell-intrinsic and/or
environmental mutagens in cancer. Working side-by-side with bioinformaticians, you will
benefit from learning computational aspects of the sequencing analyses, engaging in
academic and industry collaborations. Mentorship will be provided by Dr. Petljak in
translating applicable findings into patents and start-up opportunities as applicable. You will
be located with the Petljak lab in the new, state-of-the-art CURE facility at 345 Park Avenue
South in the center of Manhattan.
To apply, please submit a CV and brief statement of interests to Dr. Petljak
).
Required Education and Experience
PhD, MD/PhD, or MD.
Preference is given to applicants with strong expertise in both cell and molecular biology in
human cancer cell models. Ideal candidates will have focused expertise in the biology of
cancer cells, including but not limited to metabolism, genomic instability, DNA damage,
repair and replication, stem cells, and other cellular states and processes associated with
cancer (e.g., stress, senescence, differentiation, cell cycle, and cell death, inflammatory
signaling).
Computational experience not required.
