Description

This is a wonderful opportunity under immediate supervision, in a trainee capacity, to assist with various administrative support that contributes to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Legal Department

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This is a training position, intended to provide students with temporary employment whereby the students may receive on-the-job instruction and perform work that will provide practical experience in their field of study.

This position is not intended to be used for permanent employment and no full-time permanent appointments will be made in this position.

This is typically a paid position with an hourly rate of $20.00.

The City may also cooperate with the selected student in order to qualify this position for a stipend program offered by a third party, a law school externship program, or other similar program.

This position will be advertised continuously until filled.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Essential Duties:

Provides assistance, such as:
drafting and preparing legal documents and correspondence including memorandums, letters, and statistical information. Assists the City Attorney in prosecution of Municipal traffic offenses.

May occasionally draft and prepare appellate, trial, and administrative hearing level pleadings, briefs, and affidavits related to civil or criminal cases.

Prepares, reviews, and edits contracts.

  • Receives instructions from staff members and applies knowledge to work situations.
  • Conducts legal research on a wide range of legal issues by utilizing a variety of legal resource books and databases.
  • Establishes and maintains files and records, including City Attorney Opinions.
  • Reviews and organizes all documents pertaining to tort claim cases and litigation files.
  • Responsible for service and filing of legal documents upon parties and courts.
  • Perform all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Perform other projects, functions, and tasks, as assigned.

Auxiliary Duties:
Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:
Rules and procedures governing civil and criminal courts, and public agencies. Advance knowledge of word processing, database, spreadsheet, and computer-aided legal research software.

Ability to:
Analyze and apply legal principles, facts, evidence and precedents to legal problems; present statements of law, fact and arguments clearly and logically in written and oral form; establish and maintain harmonious and cooperative relationships with other city staff and the public; perform legal research and prepare legal opinions; evaluate complaints and obtain information through personal interviews

Education and Experience:

Students must possess a Bachelor's degree, be enrolled in an accredited law school with federal work-study eligibility during their service and be eligible to be court certified shortly after being hired.

The City may also cooperate with the selected student in order to qualify this position for a stipend program offered by a third party, a law school externship program, or other similar program.


Desirable Qualifications:
Municipal government knowledge or experience, and/or familiarity with labor and employment law, contracts, constitutional law, torts, land use, criminal prosecution, and real property law, are highly desirable

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects.

The position requires mobility.

Duties involve moving materials weighing up to 5 pounds on a regular basis such as files, books, office equipment, etc., and may infrequently require moving materials weighing up to 10 pounds.

Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, calculator, and standard office equipment.
