About the Position


The Forest Planner & NEPA Specialist position is part of MB&G's Technical Services Group, a group of professionals with experience in forest inventory design, growth and yield modeling, harvest scheduling, forest policy, GIS, and programming.

In this position you will prepare analyses helping inform forest land management on public land and will support analysis related to private lands.

You will help land managers analyze and solve land management problems as well as develop plans that guide forest management.

For projects related to public land management, you will lead MB&G development of analysis for documents required under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), or similar state-level legislation, including silviculture reports, prescription description, and impact assessments.

This position requires an understanding of public land management, experience conceptualizing and performing data analyses to assess environmental impacts of different management alternatives, and experience writing environmental analysis documents.



The Forest Planner & NEPA Specialist will:

  • Leads internal team to execute and complete forestry related analysis for Environmental Impact Statements (EIS), Environmental Assessments (EA), and specialist reports including silviculture reports, prescription description, and impact assessments.
  • Collaborates with external firms as part of a larger team of specialists to create NEPA related documents.
  • Participates in the development of forest management plans for public and private clients.

Specific tasks include:

  • Lead or assist in preparing environmental analysis documents (silviculture reports, prescription descriptions, and impact assessments).
  • Lead or assist in preparing reports for clients to answer forest management questions.
  • Develop data analyses to assess environmental impacts related to forest management activities.
  • Functions as Project Manager including oversight of the planning, budgeting, and execution of forest land planning projects.
  • Provides analytical support to other MB&G projects as assigned.
  • Assists in project proposal development.
  • Assists with development of client relationships and participates in business development functions.
  • Operates independently under minimal supervision.
This is a remote position, however, residency in Washington, Oregon or California, preferred.

You should possess the following skills, experience, and background:

  • BS in forest management, environmental sciences, or similar natural resource related field.
* >6 years' experience in forestland management and analysis including >3 years' experience in preparing NEPA, or similar state level documents.

  • Experience analyzing impacts of potential management alternatives or policy changes.
  • Understanding of legal requirements under NEPA and/or similar state-level legislation.
  • Familiarity with key issues affecting western public land management.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with tabular data analysis in Excel, Python, or R.
  • Experience with spatial data analysis in ESRI ArcPro.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Responsive and client service oriented.
  • Field forestry experience is desirable.
  • Fuels management experience is desirable.
  • Fuels modeling experience is desirable.
  • Experience preparing presentations and presenting at public meetings is desirable.
