Position Information
Hiring Department: Library - Research and Instruction

Hours: 40 hours per week, standard Monday- Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm; flexibility required on evenings and weekends

FLSA status: Exempt

Purpose of Position
Professional position, reporting to the Assessment and Instruction Librarian, as part of the Library's leadership team for Information Literacy Instruction. Responsible for developing and facilitating information literacy-focused workshops and/or supplementary lessons for the University's research and student populations, with particular attention to the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields. As a member of the Library's Research and Instruction Department, the individual in this position will cultivate their knowledge of STEM-related information and research tools to provide specialized research consultation services to students and researchers in those fields. This position also includes collection development and liaison duties, with occasional night and weekend hours.

Essential Functions

Provides general and specialized information literacy instructional services in the Library, across campus, and online.

Prepares instructional material on information literacy in a variety of mediums to effectively educate students in both face-to-face and online settings.

Provides research consultation services to students at all degree levels in the STEM-related disciplines, and to faculty in the STEM-related disciplines.

Conducts formal and informal networking and outreach to develop innovative approaches for the Library and its staff to address the needs of students.

Evaluates current and emerging evidence in research on academic libraries; contribution to higher education to tailor outreach and support strategies to the unique needs of UTEP students and faculty in the STEM disciplines.

Actively seeks new opportunities to implement information literacy instruction in the STEM disciplines by networking with faculty, being well-informed about degree plans, and keeping abreast of campus-wide initiatives.

Collaborates with faculty and colleagues to create tailored, practical, relevant information literacy class assignments, tutorials, and assessments.

Keeps up-to-date with the latest developments in the field of information literacy, instructional technologies, instructional design, assessment, emerging practices, and information literacy standards.

Keeps informed of developments in STEM research and potential corresponding information materials to support research and curricular activities in the University.

Combines knowledge of learning theories, expertise in library and information resources, and public speaking skills to create positive, productive learning experiences.

Maintains an up-to-date, working knowledge of general and specialized Library and non-Library resources in order to provide general to specialized research consultations at the Access Services Desk, via phone, email or SMS, or through the Library's chat service.

Participates in collection development in collaboration with science and engineering librarians, to include: weeding materials, serials review, and consulting with faculty on acquisitions.

Contributes to the Library, the University, and the profession through involvement in committees, organizations, and service activities.

Seeks opportunities with faculty in the STEM disciplines to positively contribute to their research from support to co-investigation/co-authorship.

Will become proficient in the Alma library management system.

Periodic evening and weekend work as required.

Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Required Qualifications:

Education: Master's Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school

Applicants Should Demonstrate:

Demonstrated ability to take initiative.

Ability to develop mastery of active learning techniques, instructional design, and in-class assessment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree or subject masters in the sciences and/or engineering.

Working knowledge of Spanish strongly desired.

Experience in information literacy instruction and assessment.

Experience creating instruction materials for remote or online audiences.

Knowledge of ACRL Information Literacy Framework. Experience with Blackboard, Springshare's LibGuides and LibAnswers products, video production software, and web design.

Experience with any library management system, preferably Alma.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to interact successfully with all segments of the Library, University and community.

Ability to work in a team environment: advises and consults with co-workers in a collegial atmosphere.

Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills. Ability to self-educate and self-improve for professional purposes.

Familiarity with equipment and software used in contemporary office environments.

Substantial knowledge of software operation and online searching, as they relate to instructional and reference services.

Problem solving ability.

Ability to plan, organize, implement projects successfully.

Flexibility; ability to adapt to new and unanticipated personnel and public service developments.
