The Radiation Therapist administers radiation therapy treatments, performs simulation procedures and assists in the planning of radiation therapy treatments. Documents all aspects of patient treatment in medical records. Supports the Chief Therapist and Technical Director in implementing new policies and procedures and attaining departmental and organizational goals. Education
  • Graduation from an accredited school of Radiation Therapy Technology. required
Experience
  • Less than 1 year Prior work experience not required
Licenses and Certifications
  • Must hold a Maryland Board of Physicians License with the letter prefix 'O' as a Radiation Therapist, required or
  • 'M' Licensed as a Radiation Therapist and Radiographer. required and
  • ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Maintains current ARRT Certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT Certification). required and
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation CPR Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification with AED. required and
  • Must maintain Maryland CE Continuing Educational Requirements (24 CE Credits/2 years). required

Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.Certification: Failure to maintain certifications (ARRT, MD State License, CPR, and Maryland CE Continuing Educational requirements) at anytime will result in suspension and /or termination and will be reflected in the associate's evaluation.Coverage: Arrives to work at designated time. Provides coverage at other offices when required. Participates in On-call schedule.Documentation: Accurately records all aspects of simulation, treatment delivery, and billing. Maintains proficiency with all aspects of the EMR. Consistently utilizes the QA Checklist function. Able to run the Contingency Report.General Responsibilities: Keeps treatment/CT simulator rooms and console areas neat, clean, organized and adequately stocked. Notifies chief therapist or technical supplies needed. Reports all treatment units/simulator malfunctions to the physicist and engineer as appropriate and documents all malfunctions/faults in the problem log(RadTrak). Observes all rules, regulations and instructions concerning radiation safety.Meetings: Attends scheduled meetings including: Technical Staff Meetings, In-Service and educational seminars sponsored by the organization, staff meetings, annual company staff meetings, , chart rounds, and peer reviews.Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required.Performance Management: Demonstrates the ability to access (log in), update and review performance goals and evaluations. Demonstrates the ability to send evaluation to immediate supervisor.Quality Assurance: Actively participates in all QA procedures by ensuring all aspects of weekly chart review are completed. Performs dose verification according to protocol and documents appropriately. Verifies and records SSD's weekly. Acquires all necessary patient imaging on all patients as prescribed by the physician. Displays film badge and ID Badge in an appropriate manner. Ensures charts of under treatment patients are accurate and complete.Scheduling: Schedules simulation and treatment procedure appropriately to ensure the office runs efficiently and patients are treated in a timely manner. Provides patient with initial appointment and treatment calendar. Assists the physician, office manager and chief therapist in ensuring the office runs efficiently and patients are treated in a timely manner. Resolves treatment schedule conflicts. Ensures all simulation and treatment schedules are resolved at the end of the day. Evaluates missed appointments with patients or family and documents missed appointments in the EMR.Simulation: Operates the CT simulator and necessary equipment, as prescribed by the physician. Demonstrates ability to performs morning quality assurance procedure, emergency shutdown procedure, and follows guidelines of the operation manuals for the CT Scanner. Performs HDR, and Mold Room duties (if applicable). Performs and maintains credentialing for, urethrograms, oral, and IV Contrast (Auto Injectors). Consistently performs Time Out procedure and provides patient with patient education on what to expect during the simulation procedure. Fabricates immobilization devices. Verifies all consent forms (including IV Contrast Consents are signed, witnessed, and dated prior to any procedure being performed Utilizes the EMR Policies and Procedures Manual.Completes all appropriate documentation, photographs & associations, QCL, and appropriate billing. Maintains Credentialing.Teamwork/Professional Interaction: Interacts professionally with all internal and external departments. Works well with others by maintaining and promoting a positive attitude within the therapy team. Interacts professionally with the patient and family members by appropriately evaluating the patient's condition to inform the physician if their attention is required.Teamwork/Professional Interaction: Documents in the patient chart any symptoms or problems pertaining to the patient. Promotes a patient friendly environment and demonstrates concern for patient comfort. Demonstrates behaviors that are consistent with the MedStar SPIRIT Values on a daily basis. Treats patients and family members with courtesy and respect. Notifies the physician and or nursing staff whenever the patient cancels a treatment appointment, and documents reason in progress notes of the EMR. Performs document scanning as required. Uses the established guidelines for vacation requests and coverage within the established system and in accordance with organizational directives and expectations.Training: Assists in training of new therapy staff, including radiology and/or radiation therapy students and shadow students. Completes all necessary student/visitor forms and forwards them to the technical director. Completes all student clinical evaluations.Treatment Delivery: Operates the linear accelerator(s) including, Imaging and Respiratory Motion . Demonstrates proficiency in the setup and administration of radiation therapy for all patient treatment procedures. Performs the morning quality assurance procedure, emergency shutdown procedure and follows guidelines of the operation manuals for the treatment unit. Administers radiation therapy treatments in a safe and competent manner according to radiation therapy safety guidelines.Treatment Delivery: Provides on going patient education by reinforcing the physician's advice regarding skin care, diet, treatment side effects, and reactions. Provides patient with education on what to expect during treatment. Consistently performs the Time- Out procedure. Performs hand calculations / adCalc dose verifications. Delivers radiation treatments in accordance with the MedStar SPIRIT Values and HRO Principles. Maintains Credentialing.
