Job Description:

GDIT is seeking an experienced Scientific/HPC Infrastructure Team Manager to lead our Scientific Infrastructure Team, providing HPC services for a large biomedical research community for our customer, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

Our Scientific Infrastructure Team is responsible for enabling and managing High Performance Computing and its associated infrastructure and interconnects across multiple locations, 100's of COTS and open-source scientific applications, and 40PB of data storage to include data archive, lifecycle policy management and data sharing services. This team serves as a customer-facing presence for the NIAID research community, providing a single point of support for new initiatives, ongoing projects, and scientific infrastructure needs. In your role as a Scientific/HPC Infrastructure Team Manager , you will lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for delivering comprehensive scientific infrastructure services to an end-user community of approximately 4500.

Under your leadership, you will be responsible for developing and implementing customer support policies and procedures with a focus on metrics driven execution to ensure that scientific and computational services are delivered to our client on time and efficiently. You will proactively identify areas for improvement, implement process enhancements, and drive efficiency for our scientific infrastructure services portfolio. You will prioritize innovation and thought leadership, delivering infrastructure solutions quickly, and understanding scientists needs to deliver value to support their research. You must be able to simultaneously manage various duties and obligations such as project and team management to ensure customer satisfaction while enhancing the caliber of services delivered.

** PLEASE NOTE: This position is primarily remote and works on East Coast hours.Expected travel to Bethesda, MD and Hamilton, MT is estimated to be 1-2x a year

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide day-to-day oversight for your team by delegating and prioritizing task execution, resolving roadblocks, and ensuring execution is efficient and timely for the delivery of all scientific infrastructure services including High Performance Computing, scientific storage, and all associated HPC infrastructure.
  • Assume product manager role for products and services in scientific infrastructure portfolio; to include identifying customer needs, owning and developing the technical strategy and vision, and rallying your team to turn the vision into reality.
  • Work closely with Project Managers/Scrum Masters to ensure transparent communications on project timelines, project execution, resource requirements, risk management, and status reporting. Occasionally step into project manager role for strategic projects based on need.
  • Drive innovation and incorporate regular R&D activities into your team's execution to deliver new services and new ways of working to keep pace with future research needs.
  • In partnership with Scientific Program Manager, identify and lead the development of new scientific infrastructure services aligned to scientists needs.
  • Oversee personnel management including staff recruitment, hiring, performance management, training, and mentoring for all team members.
  • Provide oversight for incidents, coordinating with resolution parties and establishing effective communication between stakeholders during and after closure of the incident to include after-action reporting.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors and 8+ years' experience or equivalent in IT related discipline
  • Hands-on experience and technical knowledge with High Performance Computing
  • Strong understanding and experience in Linux systems administration
  • Understanding of storage administration and optimization to include parallel file systems, multi-petabyte scale-out NAS storage, and data lifecycle approaches
  • Experience overseeing a portfolio of technology services and leading a technical team's day-to-day execution
  • Familiarity with principles and practices of ITIL to include incident management, problem management, service request management, change management, and service level management
  • People management experience to include recruiting, hiring, performance management, training, and mentoring for a team of engineers
  • Availability to travel 1-2x a year to Maryland and Montana
  • Availability to work East Coast hours

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills to guide team when resolving incidents.
  • Experience administering RedHat / CentOS based systems
  • Experience administering IBM Spectrum Scale and/or Lustre file systems
  • Experience with cloud-based services (e.g. Azure, AWS, GCP)
  • Experience working in a life-sciences oriented-environment
  • Experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible, SaltStack
  • Familiarity with Slurm, Sun Grid Engine, or their derivatives
  • Knowledge of DevOps culture, practices, and technologies
  • Understanding of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) cybersecurity framework and Security Assessment and Authorization (SA&A) process
  • Familiarity with genomic analyses tools, workflows and data types
