The Mechanic for the city of Newburyport maintains all city and CDL vehicles, excluding fire trucks, and heavy equipment in a reliable and safe condition, so as to be available for service according to approved standards. The work involves performing all types of equipment maintenance, preventative maintenance and repair work; specialized maintenance for all equipment; maintaining tools and equipment in the most cost effective manner and maintaining and improving upon the upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control.

This position requires a high school diploma or GED with three years of vehicle and heavy equipment mechanic experience; vocational school or certificate may substitute for one year of experience; or any equivalent combination of education experience and training. Must have and maintain a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) Class B with airbrakes endorsement and submit to CDL drug and alcohol testing regulations. Must have and maintain a hoisting engineer license 2B. This position requires the ability to frequently lift up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lift up to 100 lbs. and must submit to CDL drug testing regulations.

This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position Monday-Friday (7 a.m. to 3 p.m.) plus required overtime. This position is in the AFSCME Union with a pay range of $27.18 to $32.02 depending on current status with the union.
