Supervisor/Fleet Management

An OverviewThe Transportation & Environmental Services Fleet Management Division is seeking a Fleet Management Supervisor to provide the first line of full supervision to Fleet Services Technicians and Service Advisors engaged in the repair and maintenance of the City's automotive fleet, including the complete range of motor vehicles and heavy equipment used in construction and refuse disposal. An employee in this class assures that proper repair methods, preventive maintenance, and approved safety practices are followed and that all resources are utilized in the best manner to maintain maximum motor fleet availability. The work of this class is performed independently under the general supervision of the Fleet Services Division Chief. Completed work is reviewed through inspection or observation and by assessment of the state of readiness and general serviceability of the City's automotive fleet and heavy equipment.

The Opportunity
Directs skilled automotive technicians/mechanics and service advisors performing maintenance and repairs on City-owned automobiles, trucks, and heavy and specialty equipment;Plans, coordinates, and administers work schedules and sequence of operations to ensure even flow and distribution of work, expeditious handling of priority repairs, and meeting schedules and deadlines to ensure that the City's fleet remains operational and available to users;Solicits and coordinates the repair of vehicles with user agencies, including diagnosis of problems, assignment of repairs to mechanics, follow-up with mechanics to determine progress and completion date, as well as a final inspection;Trains staff, provides counseling and support to Fleet Services Technicians and Service Advisors, approves and disapproves leave, acts on grievances, and recommends other disciplinary actions;Administers the City-wide motor vehicle and motorized equipment preventive maintenance program, according to the VA State Motor Vehicle Inspection and VA State emissions inspections program;Determines priorities and sequence and intervals for inspections, service, and repair;Perform related work as required.About T&ES

Minimum & Additional Requirements

High School Diploma or GED, or vocational/trade school with courses in automotive technology, including courses in English and arithmetic; three years of experience in motor equipment service and repair work at the journey level of Fleet Services Technician; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Possession of, or the ability to obtain, (A) Certification by the Virginia Department of Air Pollution Control for licensing as (1) emissions inspector, and (2) emissions mechanic; and (B) certification by the Virginia Department of State Police for licensing as a vehicle safety inspector.

Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of residence. Employees in this class must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the state of residence. Employees must maintain current all required certifications and licenses.

Preferred Qualifications

Five to ten years of experience in motor equipment services and repair work as a Fleet Services Technician; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; five to ten years of supervisory experience in the fields of Fleet Management/Equipment, a MASTERS ASE certification in light, heavy, alternative fuel, or EVT.

Notes

This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks including but not limited to drug testing, criminal background, and medical fitness for duty.

The Department of Transportation & Environmental Services is a first response department and as such all T&ES employees are deemed essential or emergency personnel and may be required to report to work when the City government is open with liberal leave or closed during emergencies.
