This person will provide paralegal support to the university's General Counsel and other in-house lawyers. This position reports to the Associate General Counsel (AGC). This is a part-time, temporary, 15-20 hour position.

Required Education


• A bachelor's degree.


• A minor in Pre-Law, certificate of completion of an ABA-approved paralegal program, or equivalent statutorily required paralegal experience (Cal. & Prof. Code section 6450(c)).

Required Experience


• Two years of substantive experience (full-or part-time) in a law firm or in-house legal department working in contracts or litigation management.


• Demonstrated aptitude and motivation to grasp the principles of American legal practice, including the concepts of fiduciary duty, attorney-client privilege, and a basic understanding of the court system and the relationship among decisional, statutory, regulatory, and contractual authority.


• Demonstrated ability to provide general law practice support, drafting legal correspondence, and conducting legal research, as well as managing legal forms and assisting in billing matters.

Primary Duties/Essential Functions


• Provide agile support within the small legal team comprising the Office of General Counsel, supporting the lawyers and Executive Assistant in the areas of contract management, responding to subpoenas, and managing in-house legal records under the guidance of in-house University policies, and legal requirements.


• Working under the direction of the AGC and in cooperation with the Executive Assistant work with other University personnel to identify and gather "documents" and "records" (as defined) in response to subpoenas.


• Assist with legal research and other legal tasks, such as drafting and preparing contracts for legal review and preparing summaries of court decisions and other materials.


• Assist in the development, refinement, and daily operations management of the Office, including, paper and electronic file management systems and databases used for litigation, contracts, subpoenas, and other corporate legal records.


• May assist with factual investigations pertaining to matters affecting the university and help organize the data and evidence obtained in such investigations.


• Maintain official university corporate documents and files, preserving and archiving for legal and historical record.


• Provide occasional project-based support to the Director of Risk Management on an exception basis, as approved by the AGC.


• Responsible for daily electronic timekeeping as it applies to the scope of this position.


• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Physical Demands


• Continuous sitting four-six hours daily; intermittent sitting and standing.


• Requires repetitive motion and sitting at computer keyboard.


• Requires hearing and speaking on the telephone.


• Meetings may require walking and/or driving to various locations.


• Ability to pull, push, bend to lower file drawers, grasp, reach up to upper file drawers and storage units, and lift up to 20 lbs.


• Must be able to climb stairs multiple times in a work day.

Visual Demands


• Computer monitor and reading.

Environment


• Pleasant office setting, comfortable temperature.

Technologies


• Proficient in Microsoft Office suite software and Google Applications.


• Experience with Lexis-Nexis and/or Westlaw research tools.

Compensation

  • Grade 7: $19.49 to $22.41 is the hourly compensation for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications, experience, and internal equity. In addition to compensation, APU offers a competitive benefits package.
