Remote, Oregon, United States ForeFlight Full time

The ideal candidate should possess a user-centered approach to work and be able to lead a design project in our iterative design process while taking a project from discovery to launch. You'll have a mixed background where you've honed exceptional skills in key disciplines such as communication, user research, UI design, and UX design. You've worked on complex problems with multiple use cases and have a curiosity to explore and push the boundaries of what our products can do.
In this role, you will work closely with product management and engineering in a cross-disciplinary team. You'll be able to articulate design strategy and rationale to peers and stakeholders while uncovering where solving user needs can meet business objectives. Together we'll work to achieve our mission, which is to make flying a joy for our users.
Role & Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with other designers, product managers, and engineers to create elegant, intuitive, and data-driven features that pilots will utilize during pre-flight planning, in-flight navigation, and post-flight debriefing
  • Operate with little guidance as the design owner within a project
  • Navigate ambiguity, recognize tradeoffs, and influence others to create ideal outcomes for the business and user
  • Produce high-quality design artifacts that evolve from focused thought around a problem, including but not limited to sketches, wireframes, user flows, high-fidelity UI mockups, and clickable prototypes
  • Identify design tasks necessary to move a project forward
  • Communicate your plan and drive initiatives to answer the pressing questions in the project
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct user research and usability testing with users to validate design and product decisions
  • Collaborate with engineers to ensure high-quality dev handoffs and final user experience meets expectations and delights customers
  • Help to improve and maintain our design system along with other product designers
  • Be an advocate for scalable solutions for both web and mobile
  • Solicit feedback often from team members and stakeholders and participate in design critiques with design team members
  • Contribute to design team culture and processes and provide mentorship for other designers

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience designing and shipping digital products
  • A strong portfolio that not only shows your work's end result but also how you think and communicate
  • An excellent communicator, written, verbal, and listening
  • Create organized presentations that are simple and effective at communicating intent
  • Highly collaborative and look to include others to uncover a deeper understanding of the problem and solution space
  • Enjoy solving difficult problems with a user-centered approach
  • Well-versed in Apple Interface Guidelines (HIG) and web best practices
  • Experience working on complex digital products and use cases
  • Experience with user research, including customer interviews and validating products through moderated usability testing
  • Proficient in Figma (Our preferred design tool)

Bonus:

  • A pilot's license or having an interest in aviation is a big plus
  • Experience designing for cartography and/or knowledge of cartographic design principles
  • Experience with 3D Modeling and Texturing assets

At ForeFlight, we know you want a rewarding career. You need challenging projects, a good work environment, and awesome coworkers to achieve that. We believe in our employees, and we empower them to make a direct impact on our products and messaging. Because we understand what our staff needs, we have a low turn-around rate, our employees become brand ambassadors, and we are recognized as a premier leader in the aviation industry.
We're looking for someone with a keen eye for detail and experience leading projects from vision to launch. Given the realities of designing for the (often harsh) cockpit environment, we expect this person to be able to produce cutting-edge interfaces that consider the realities of glare, turbulence, and low light conditions.
A solid understanding of iOS design best practices, including knowledge of Apple's Human Interface Guidelines, is required. Although we're not looking for someone proficient in Objective-C or Swift, the ideal candidate is familiar with the basics of iOS UI implementation.
Professionally, this person is driven to execute, deliver, and complete projects independently, seeking advice and direction from team members when needed and plowing ahead to completion when the path forward is clear. This person will be able to point to specific examples that highlight the individual's ability to meet the objectives outlined above, and references will confirm this person's unique skill set.
This position is for someone based in our Austin, TX office or remote. A pilot designer, or an individual looking to pursue their private pilot license, is a huge plus. Benefits include medical insurance, 401K with matching, and flight training reimbursement.
