Duties
  • You will supervise a diverse workforce that contains Lab Specialist, U.S. Military, and/or local national Physical Science Technician personnel.
  • You will implement protocols and work-plans for daily and long-term operational readiness of a laboratory environment.
  • You will repair, maintain, calibrate, and tune instrumentation used in a laboratory environment.
  • You will perform quality assurance on all unknowns, stock solutions, and chemical mixtures used in a lab environment.
  • You will develop plans and procedures for performing analytical testing services on all organization owned products procured and stored with the command area of responsibility.
  • You will analyze difficult and usual problems through interpretation of sophisticated laboratory and direct testing methodology.

      Qualifications

      In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Mentoring/leading others with performance and tracking work output against set performance standards; 2) Determining areas of improvement and consulting with other supervisors/leaders to determine corrective measures; 3) Carrying out protocols and work-plans for daily and long-term operational readiness of a laboratory environment; 4) Repairing, maintaining, calibrating, and tuning instrumentation used in a laboratory environment (i.e. chromatographs, spectrophotometers, electrochemical devices, centrifuges, microscopes); 5) Performing quality assurance on unknowns, stock solutions, and chemical mixtures used in a lab environment; 6) Providing budget support input and maintaining accurate financial records for the laboratory to ensure proper fiduciary responsibility; and 7) Updating laboratory protocols to comply with changes in analytical techniques and requirements to forecast purchases of new or replacement equipment.       Basic Requirements:
      Degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

      Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

      WORK ENVIRONMENT: Workers in chemistry and biochemistry laboratories are exposed to hazardous materials which include corrosive, reactive and/ or toxic substances (radioactives, poisons, carcinogens, mutagens, etc.) Certain analytical instruments (X-ray diffractometer, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, etc.) may generate ionizing radiation when in use or require the use of high voltage components. Work with Class II biohazards (including staph bacteria) occurs in the biology laboratories. Therefore, the incumbent must regularly make provisions for hazardous conditions during performance of work done in support of the department's teaching and research missions. The incumbent must also supervise the dissemination of information about such hazardous conditions to members of the technical staff, as well as all department members, and must ensure that proper safety requirements are known and followed.
