Duties

As an Attorney-Advisor (General), this position provides technical legal guidance in multiple legal practice areas including the Vessel Documentation Program, regulatory interpretation, and proposed changes to regulations and policy as well as associated administrative issues such as Freedom of Information FOIA) requests, labor negotiations, employment law, acquisition, ethics, and other topics.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

  • Providing legal advice on services with respect to questions, regulation, practices, or other matters regarding the interpretation and application of vessel documentation laws and regulations.
  • Conducting legal briefings and makes oral legal presentations at meetings, seminars, and federal agency adjudicatory forums, as required.
  • Making vessel build and citizenship determinations, to include preparing official letters concerning determination decision.
  • Tracking and reviewing proposed legislation, rulemakings, filings, and petitions, and other employment law governance actions having potential impact on the Coast Guard.
  • Provides legal advice and counsel on a wide variety of legal matters relating to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Privacy Act, labor negotiations, employment law, acquisition, ethics and other matters of jurisdiction and associated authority.
