R&D Manager & Sr. Scientist-Charlotte, NC

This role will be responsible for the disciplinary lead of our North American Construction Solutions and Nonwovens R&D team and work and steer the related R&D projects. As a polymer chemist, engineer or material scientist, this role will be an active and contributing member of ED's Global Centers of Excellence and build collaborative relationships with colleagues across the regions. Strong supervisory experience will be a valued asset as this position will be responsible for managing a team of scientists and technicians. The successful candidate will require to mentor, train and guide less experienced or newer colleagues, and direct activities of assigned scientist and technicians toward achieving project goals and timelines and play and active role in their career development.

Formula for Success:

  1. Facilitate, steer, and drive the innovation pipeline for Construction Solutions and Nonwoven segments, in alignment with business strategies, market trends and customer unmet needs.
  2. R&D liaison responsible for building and strengthening relationships with key customers and supporting business growth opportunities within the Construction and Nonwovens markets by facilitating R&D support and technology transfer.
  3. Work closely with commercial marketing, tech service and operations teams for market analysis, customer support, and manufacturing debottlenecking.
  4. Direct and prioritize activities of assigned R&D team toward achieving innovation pipeline and development project objectives.
  5. Support the execution of the North American regional Digital Roadmap for R&D, based on the levers: data management, standardization, automation and modeling
  6. Work and cooperate in interdisciplinary project teams, including global data scientists, chemists, process engineers, and IT experts.
  7. Act as mentor and support the assigned R&D team for career development and growth aspiration of the team.
  8. Responsible for protecting BASF's intellectual property in the respective technical platforms and markets.
  9. Design and develop of new products for the Construction Solution and Nonwovens fields. Management of R&D projects efficiently and effectively to achieve target objectives.
  10. Regularly attend and actively participate in customer and BASF technical meetings
  11. Stay current with scientific and technical advances in the relevant market, while scouting for relevant technologies in other markets and fields.
  12. Collaborate with our Global R&D colleagues and internal/external centers of excellence.

What we Look for in You:

Education

  • Ph.D. degree in polymer or material science, chemical engineering, organic chemistry or a related field.

Experience

  • Superior knowledge of emulsion polymerization, polymer science & physics, and intimate knowledge in the coatings & adhesives for Construction and Nonwoven markets and customers
  • Minimum 6 years of experience to synthesis and development of resins and emulsion polymers or related fields
  • Minimum 6 years of experience to R&D team and project management, scale up and commercialization of resins and emulsion polymers or related fields
  • Minimum 6 years of direct engagement and experience in driving R&D with key customers and accounts.

  • Excellent hands-on experimentation and superior problem-solving skills
  • Strong capabilities in project planning & oversight
  • Both traditional and agile project management experience desirable
  • Analytical and future-oriented way of thinking, with high motivation in driving innovative and sustainable solutions with autonomy
  • Excellent written, oral and listening skills, with ability to build relationships at all levels within BASF and externally with key customers.
