Under direct supervision of the Nurse Manager and guided by the procedures of Ambulatory Services, the Senior Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) functions as the primary contact for prescription medication authorizations, all durable medical equipment orders and authorizations, as well as provide comprehensive care coordination for a panel of pulmonology patients for the Pediatric Gastroenterology practice. The LVN is responsible for initiating complex medication prior authorizations and infusion authorizations via electronic or paper systems and assisting with alternative medication/infusion recommendations from the insurance companies when medications/infusion sites are not covered. In addition, the LVN assists with data entry of prescriptions into electronic systems (e.g., APEX), management of medication handling and other tasks related to clinical operations. The LVN is also responsible for coordinating the care for all special medical equipment including obtaining medical equipment orders, transcribing onto forms and obtaining insurance authorization. The LVN is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of pharmacology and authorizations. The LVN will utilize a high level of clinical knowledge to fulfill patient needs, ensure efficient patient care, and provide patient instruction when necessary. The LVN will act as a patient advocate and as a liaison between insurance companies, inpatient/outpatient services, patients/families and all other necessary healthcare services to manage and facilitate efficient and timely care received in clinic as well as coordination of care. The LVN may also have a role in championing quality initiatives or providing insight into the medication/equipment support role in optimizing clinical operations.
This individual will utilize good customer service and communication skills on a daily basis via phone/electronic contact, mail correspondence, and personal contact with both internal and external customers. This individual supports the standards of the policies and procedures of the practice, and complies with all Ambulatory Services and Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, and administrative and clinical practice. The LVN is required to adhere to the Telephone and House Standards as adopted by the Medical Center, as well as demonstrating UCSF's PRIDE values and the AIDET fundamentals of communication in all patient care and stakeholder interactions.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% – 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.
