Duties
  • You will break assignments down into proper sequence of operations and determine size of materials using mathematical formulas.
  • You will clean, deburr, and lay out pattern and form lines by using trigonometry, radical line and parallel line development.
  • You will form boxes and pans, electronic chassis and panels of noncomplex types, manufacture machine guards and other guards for safety purposes.
  • You will make sign blanks, frames of either angle iron or aluminum, manufacture ducts and fittings and install for heating and air conditioning, manufacture electrical troughs and boxes.
  • You will manufacture and install gutters and leader heads conductors for water.
  • You will do normal sheet metal maintenance of buildings such as replacing flashings, metal roofs, gutters and down spouts.
  • You will join material by bolting, seaming, soldering (soft and silver) riveting, brazing, spot welding and metallic arc welding.
  • You will finish surfaces to prescribed specifications and check job to be sure it meets required specifications.

    • The work involves standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling and may be done in cramped and awkward positions and hard to reach places.
    • The work frequently requires climbing ladders, stagings or scaffolding while assembling and installing prefabricated sheet metal ducts, troughs, gutter, etc.
    • You may be required to lift up to and in excess of 50 pounds.
    • You may be required to wear protective devices such as hard hats, gloves, safety shoes, eye goggles or flash shields.

      You will serve as a Sheet Metal Mechanic in the Research and Development Services Division, Support Services Branch, Shop Services Section, R&D Projects, Code of NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY

      Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

      The ability to read blueprints utilizing a knowledge or orthographic projection including: 1) A working knowledge of the physical metallurgy of the materials used to determine weldability, forming characteristics under both high and low temperatures, and procedures necessary to control warpage and distortion in the forming and joining processes; 2) Use of sheet metal hand tools, such as hand tongs, hand seamers, rivet sets, hammers, squares, dividers, trammels, and protractors, all types of snips, rules, punches and hand riveters; 3) Use of kick shears, power shears, hand and rotary punches, power punches, box and pan brakes, power brakes and presses, drill presses, lock formers, beading and crimping machines, and roll formers and 4) Knowledge of the functions of spot welders, acetylene torches and welding machines.
