Description: Job Summary

The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University seeks a highly motivated and skilled arboriculture professional for the role of Arborist I. The successful candidate will join the Arboretum's Horticulture and Landscape Department in the stewardship of North America's oldest public arboretum and one of the most comprehensive and well-documents plant collections of its kind.

The Arboretum's Arborist Team consists of four full time individuals that rotate through the collections evaluating plant health and assessing and executing the unique pruning needs of each specimen. This team also performs large-scale plant removals, hazard tree assessments and implementation of corrective measures, IPM (integrated pest management) practices, snow operations and other weather-related essential work, operation and maintenance of a wide range of equipment, and other tasks as needed as part of the full landscape operations. In addition, arboriculture staff members support the Arboretum's longstanding internship training programs through development and instruction of courses, hands-on training, and mentorship. The successful candidate is expected to engage fully in the professional activities of the Arboretum and work collaboratively with colleagues on interdepartmental efforts.

Normal work hours are Monday-Friday 7:00AM-3:30PM (40 hours/week). Hourly wage: $40.38. Benefits eligible position.

Position Description

Essential Functions:

Performs a wide variety of duties associated with the overall operation of the Living Collections of the Arnold Arboretum including:
  • Aerial lift and chainsaw operation
  • Tree climbing
  • Large tree removals
  • Cabling and bracing
  • Pruning
  • Transplanting
  • Identification and methods of control of pests and diseases
  • Snow removal
  • Maintenance, repair, and safe and proper operation of various types of equipment
  • May oversee the work of Gardener I and Gardener II as assigned
  • Overseeing the work of interns, apprentices, and term appointments
  • Related job duties as assigned
In addition, may be required to:
  • Utilize BGBase (plant records database) to update and maintain plant records
  • Maintain appropriate computerized records for equipment and grounds maintenance; order parts and supplies for grounds and equipment that have been approved by the Manager or Assistant Manager
  • Assist and facilitate researchers and professionals in their work and research


Basic Qualifications

(Candidates must meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role):
  • A minimum of three years' experience in the field of arboriculture or a related field.
  • Bachelor's or Associate's Degree. Hiring preference in the field of arboriculture, horticulture, or related field. Experience as a climbing arborist may be substituted for the educational requirement.
  • Must be able to perform manual labor, including frequent lifting/carrying/transporting loads up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions in all seasons and serve as essential staff for weather-related emergencies impacting the grounds.


Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Skills required to utilize a database (BGBase) to update and maintain plant records. Training will be provided.
  • Maintain appropriate computerized records for equipment and grounds maintenance; order parts and supplies for grounds and equipment that have been approved by the Manager or Assistant Manager
  • Assist and facilitate researchers and professionals in their work and research


Working Conditions
  • Possess and maintain a Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator's License within six months of employment.
  • Possess and maintain (within six months of employment) a hoisting license of the proper classification as required by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Be certified as an Arborist with the Massachusetts Arborist Association or with the International Society of Arboriculture within six months of employment.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and D.O.T. Medical Examiner's Certificate, which will be paid by the Arboretum as part of the pre-employment process.
