POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (DIABETIC CARDIOMYOPATHY) – ID#

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), Metabolic Health in Type-2 Diabetes Project, Diabetes COBRE Program, in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.


MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $5,100 - $5,400/Mon.


DUTIES: Assists the Principal Investigator (PI) in conducting research to study cardiovascular and neurovascular consequences of type-2 diabetes, especially as it relates to cardiac muscle metabolism, insulin resistance, and neurotransmission. Analyzes data, generates and presents project summaries and reports. Keeps a detailed notebook summarizing experiments and recording research data. Maintains computer database of research data. Prepares data for presentation in research conferences and for manuscript preparation. Collaborates on ongoing investigations with cell, rat and mouse models of insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes. Assists PI in preparing manuscripts and presentations to bring awareness to the scientific community and general public of the results of this project. Assists PI in training students in the laboratory. Designs safety procedures. Adapts new procedures, methods or instrumentation relative to research procedures.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

PhD from an accredited college or university in Biomedical Sciences or a related field (e.g., Cell/Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Neuroscience, Pathology, Veterinary Science, Bioengineering).

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience in a biomedical research lab.

KNOWLEDGE

Strong knowledge of general cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, neuroscience and physiology along with current laboratory assays and techniques in the areas of Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience and animal-based disease models.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Strong ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to keep accurate notes and records. Ability to assist with research support. Proficient in using spreadsheet and other recording, presenting, and office processing software. Proficient in statistics, literature search, animal surgery, and sequencing analyses. Ability to independently perform lab work. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to complete the UH Laboratory Safety training within one (1) week from date of hire. Must be able to complete the Environmental & Health Safety Office (EHSO) Hazardous Waste Generator training within two (2) weeks from date of hire. Must be able to complete the Office of Research Compliance (ORC) General Biosafety training within one (1) month from date of hire. Must be able to complete the UH Title IX training within thirty (30) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to work with rats and mice. Must not have obvious allergies to rodents or other allergens found in the laboratory animal environment. Must be able to lift laboratory equipment up to twenty-five (25) pounds unassisted. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to enroll in the Occupational Health and Safety program, which includes completing a health history questionnaire and obtaining medical clearance to work with animals in a vivarium.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

Laboratory experience performing basic science research as undergraduate student or technician. Experience in working with isolated heart and primary cells. Experience with rat or mouse models of disease, and performing rodent survival surgeries.
