Summary

As a Nursing Assistant offers physiological, psychological, and spiritual support to the VA patients by performing a direct patient care, department organization and other duties as assigned, to meet the changing needs of the patients and nursing department. All care is delivered to patients in a respectful, non-judgmental manner. The NA duties are performed on a Medical/Surgical Step-down Ward under the direction of the Registered Nurse.

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until April 1, 2024. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be February 2, 2024. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals on an as-needed basis until positions are filled. All referred applicants receive a final notification once a selection decision has been made.

Major duties include, but not limited to:

  • Assist with care of acutely ill and more complex patients.
  • Makes observations of subtle changes in patient's condition and reports to registered nurse.
  • Observes patients for appropriate oxygen administration and performs pulse oximeter readings.
  • Assists the nurse or provider with wound care.
  • Reinforces patient teaching.
  • Participates actively in mandatory reviews, unit meetings and in-services.
  • Manages indwelling urinary catheter bags; emptying recording and reporting urine output to the nurse.
  • Performs and records blood glucose monitoring and reports finding to nurse.
  • Provides 1:1 sitter coverage.
  • Obtains and records temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respirations, pulse oximetry, height, weight and I&O.
  • Removal of heparin lock and urinary catheter based on competency.
  • Ensures correct placement of O2 via nasal cannula/mask.
  • Performs EKGs.
  • Exchange oxygen tanks without adjusting oxygen LPM.
  • Transports patients to tests and procedures as directed.
  • Assists in monitoring and documentation of restraints as directed.
  • Maintains and stocks supplies on the unit as directed.
  • Demonstrates skill/knowledge/ability to perform treatments, procedures and the use and reprocessing of reusable medical equipment appropriate to assigned duties.

Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP): This occupational series is eligible for the Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP). Participants must sign a service agreement and maintain an acceptable level of performance to remain eligible for this program. Funding is limited; therefore, applications will be approved on a first-come basis.

Additional Pay:
  • Shift Differential - 10% of basic pay for work performed during regularly scheduled hours between 6pm and 6am.
  • Weekend Premium - 25% of basic pay for work performed between the hours of midnight Friday and midnight Sunday. This includes continuous service connected to work performed during these hours.
  • Holiday Pay - 2 times basic hourly rate for regularly scheduled, non-overtime work on a designated holiday.
