Summary

This position is assigned to the Mental Health Clinical Center of the VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS). The position at this time is based at the Baltimore Division of VAMHCS, but may need to provide psychological services at the other VAMHCS sites.



Duties

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

This is an open continuous announcement until September 30, 2024. Qualified applicants will be considered and referred as vacancies become available.

Major Duties:

  • Responsible for the delivery of a full range of psychological and substance use services primarily to Veterans with chronic pain whose needs cannot be met within the Neurology Department's existing chronic pain service.
  • Psychodiagnosis, clinical health psychology, evidence-based individual and group psychotherapy, patient screening and evaluation, development of individual treatment plans, setting of treatment goals, utilization of specialized approaches with groups, as well as numerous other skills available to the experienced clinical health psychologist.
  • Performs diagnostic and / or brief mental/behavioral health assessments, risk assessments and safety planning, and brief behavioral health treatment for patients presenting with difficulties regarding chronic pain and co-occurring mental health and/or substance use disorders.
  • Provides therapeutic interventions including acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, biofeedback, relaxation training, and other evidence-based behavioral medicine interventions.
  • Provides education about mental and behavioral health topics, referral management to general or specialty mental health, and engage in collaborative care management seeing patients on a same-day basis for any time-sensitive risk and intervention needs.
  • Participates in developing and maintaining an effective relationship between the Neurology Service and the Mental Health Clinical Center within the VAMHCS.
  • Serves as a consultant in areas including, but not limited to, smoking cessation and other tobacco/nicotine addiction related disorders and their treatment; infectious diseases; chronic and acute medical illnesses including, among others, ventilator dependent patients; behavioral correlates of medical and surgical conditions; and health maintenance and disease prevention.
