PRIMARY PURPOSE:

This is an entry level position for someone with limited to no experience in the aquarium field, with a strong desire to work in the industry. The Aquarist 1 will assist with all day-to-day duties of the Aquarium Department. In addition, they will have the opportunity to work with the Education, Life Support teams. You will also be responsible for achieving the goals and objectives of the aquarium staff, which will be consistent with the goals and objectives of the property. All duties are to be performed in accordance with federal, state, local laws, regulations and ordinances as well as corporate and departmental policies, practices and procedures.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engage, entertain and inspire all who visit by making a focused commitment to S.H.O.W. service standards
  • Assist in testing, evaluating and maintaining water quality using laboratory grade equipment
  • Prepare animal diets and daily feedings
  • Observe the animal collection daily and effectively communicate any health-related issues to the Curator of Aquariums and Staff Veterinary Team in a timely manner
  • Assist with diagnosis of diseases, medical treatments/procedures, necropsies, and specimen transports
  • Inspect, maintain, repair, and operate life support systems and filtration equipment
  • Assist in the husbandry, daily care of animal exhibits, dive to clean interior of aquarium, make repairs, and catch fish
  • Maintain accurate up-to-date records and observation logs
  • Interact with guests to share knowledge and answer questions about the aquariums and their inhabitants
  • Other job-related duties as requested

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to multi-task and work well in a fast paced, team-oriented environment with environmental conditions such as CRT fatigue, noise, dust, and smoke
  • Able to effectively communicate in English, in both written and verbal forms
  • Basic knowledge of computer software to include Outlook, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as office equipment, i.e. telephone, copier, fax machine
  • Excellent customer service skills and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with all business contacts

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma and equivalent
  • One (1) year of related experience
  • Work varied shifts, to include weekends and holidays

PREFERRED:

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Undergraduate degree in Life Science or a minimum or one (1) year of aquatic animal care experience in a professional aquarium environment
  • Experience working in a similar resort setting
  • Experience operating and maintaining aquariums
  • Depending on operational needs, shifts and hours of employment may vary
  • Must be available to work evenings, holidays and weekends
