Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Up to 3 technicians will be hired to support MNFI aquatics research, monitoring, and inventory projects specific to native mussel and aquatic macroinvertebrate ecology and conservation.

Working closely with the principal investigators, technicians will work to build and organize information on native mussels and aquatic macroinvertebrates to support the growth and development of Michigan's Natural Heritage Database and support the biodiversity research conducted by MNFI.

Duties will include working with large sets of native mussel occurrence data, identifying aquatic macroinvertebrates to genus and family level, processing samples, and the use, development, and support of GIS systems specific to aquatic species. Specifically, technicians will enter data into Michigan's Natural Heritage Database using Biotics software and supporting applications within the ESRI environment, such as ArcGIS Online, Survey123, and Field Maps.

Positions may conduct a limited amount of field work, with field sampling regularly requiring long hours and flexible work schedules under adverse working conditions (e.g., hot and humid weather, long and difficult hikes in wetlands, and biting insects).

Desired Qualifications

  • Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.
  • Combination of education and specific, relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge, and use of appropriate approaches, skills and techniques, which reflect an understanding and awareness of social, cultural and economic diversity of the target population served.
  • Demonstrated success in program development and delivery to diverse audiences/communities and proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, color, gender, national origin, gender identity, religion, age, height, weight, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, marital status, family status, veteran status, socioeconomic class, and other differences.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Travel in local and surrounding communities and occasional long-distance travel are required as a regular part of this position.
  • Proficiency in use of technology (e.g., web research, Zoom, Qualtrics, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook for mail/calendaring, distance technology, etc.).
  • Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position.
  • Experience identifying aquatic macroinvertebrates to genus and family level
  • Experience with database management and data processing
  • Proficiency in use of technology (e.g., web research, ArcGIS Online, Survey123, Zoom, Qualtrics, Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook for mail/calendaring, distance technology, etc.).
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and willingness to learn
