Position Summary

The Pingry School seeks a dedicated Lower School Learning Specialist to support identified students and model differentiated instruction for faculty. The Learning Specialist will be student-facing, facilitating small group and one-on-one sessions and spending time in classrooms. The ideal candidate will have an insightful understanding of effective teaching methods for different learning styles and aptitudes, excellent listening and observational skills, a background in teaching study skills and executive functioning skills, and an empathic mindset. This position is an administrative 10.5-month contract and will partner with the Counseling and Academic Support Team K-12 (CAST) and the Lower School Leadership team.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports the academic progress and growth of Pingry's K-5 grade students. This role will partner with our existing Lower School Learning Specialist and focus their work with either Kindergarten to Grade 2 or Grade 3 to Grade 5.
  • Assists teachers in addressing students' varying learning needs and supporting their efforts to help these students excel.
  • Collaborates with and supports teaching staff by offering resources, assistance, advice, and training to enable faculty to better meet all learners' needs.
  • Building social and emotional foundational skills by teaching a section(s) of our r Decisions Program.
  • Pushes into classrooms and promotes faculty growth by recommending academic interventions and ways to differentiate instruction in the classroom.
  • Provides individual and small group instruction for students in the areas of executive functioning for students in the Lower School.
  • Assists with early identification of learning differences and referrals for early intervention such as occupational therapy and/or speech/language services.
  • Supports teachers in understanding and providing recommendations based on students' Official Accommodation Plans.
  • Observe students in the classroom setting to offer suggestions for accommodations based on student evaluations.
  • Maintains accurate documentation on student progress throughout the year.
  • Assumes an active role in grade-level team meetings and regularly reports on student achievement and progress.
  • Serves as a member of the Student Success Team (SST) with other academic specialists at the lower school.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of accommodations and recommended strategies.
  • Meets with individual parents when necessary to discuss the progress of their children.
  • Provides counsel and possible referral to non-identified students or whose parents inquire about a perceived need.
  • Collaborating with CAST, develops and presents workshops and professional development relevant to academic skills and other topics related to learning disabilities.
  • Brings a compassionate and holistic approach to collaborating with students, families, providers, and colleagues to support the education of all types of learners. Qualifications
    • A degree in special education or an advanced degree and experience in a related field (school psychology, LDTC, BCBA, speech pathology, etc.)
    • Experience in a small group or one-on-one executive functioning skill instruction required, such as direct experience as a Learning Specialist or Special Education Teacher
    • Minimum of 4 years of related experience working with students with diverse learning needs.
    • Experience with and enthusiasm for working with Lower School level students and understanding of their developmental milestones.
    • Dedication to supporting the academic, social, and emotional well-being of students
    • Robust interpersonal skills.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Dedication to partnering collaboratively with a team of talented employees
    • Comfortable with incorporating the latest technology into your workflow, including Schoology and Zoom
    • Skilled in navigating the Google Suite of applications (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, etc.)
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
    • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.
    • Experience creating, supporting, and sustaining a culture of access and equity in a school environment.
