Ecosystem Ecology Research Technician

A full-time research technician position is available to facilitate and conduct field and laboratory research under the supervision of Dr. Allison Gill at Williams College. The research technician will help manage a laboratory composed of Williams undergraduates and support a three-year NSF-funded project focused on the effects of nitrogen inputs on soil carbon formation and cycling in a temperate hardwood forest. Field and laboratory tasks include the collection and chemical analysis of plant materials, soil, gas, and water samples. The Research Technician will be trained in specialized lab methods, including (but not limited to) stable isotope analyses, colorimetric methods, soil gas flux analyses, and data management. The successful candidate must be able to engage effectively with a community that is diverse in all ways and help make the lab environment inclusive and accessible to all users. The Technician's time will be split between approximately 30% field work (at Hopkins Memorial Forest, Williamstown MA) and 70% lab work and data analysis (at Williams College).

Responsibilities

The core responsibilities of the Ecosystem Ecology Research Technician are to:
  • Support day-to-day lab operations, including training undergraduate research assistants, maintaining equipment, updating protocols, and purchasing lab supplies.
  • Conduct field sample collection, field instrument and datalogger maintenance, and field-based greenhouse gas flux measurements.
  • Conduct laboratory analyses of soil, plant, and water samples.
  • Manage and analyze laboratory data.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, Environmental Science, or related field required.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Previous field and laboratory research experience and R proficiency is a plus.
Pay for this position is $22 per hour. Early September start is ideal. All application materials will be reviewed by the search committee.
