Duties

As a Geographer within the Western Geographic Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Works independently and leads efforts in consultation with staff scientists, cooperative researchers and technical support personnel to conduct spatial analyses of natural and cultural resources related to vegetation, soil, and topographic changes.
  • Assists principal investigators and directs other staff with the field collection, maintenance, and processing of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS; also known as ground-based LiDAR) and field-based vegetation and topographic monitoring data.
  • Extracts and processes diverse remote sensing data from airborne and satellite sensors at multiple spatiotemporal resolutions.
  • Conducts spatial analyses and modeling that relates climate, weather, topography, geomorphology, vegetation, ecosystem, fuel, ignition patterns, fire management, human impacts, and other data to understand risk to cultural and natural resource values.
  • Helps lead the preparation of scientific publications, reports, and other products by writing. Prepares and delivers oral and poster presentations of scientific findings.
  • Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.

Physical Demands: Field work may require considerable walking, lifting, bending, and climbing to collect data.

Work Environment: Field work may entail physical effort such as walking over rough terrain, climbing on landforms to place equipment, or walking on wet or slippery surfaces. Field work may take place in adverse weather conditions.
