OVERVIEW: The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet University is a federally funded center with exemplary elementary and secondary education programs for deaf and hard of hearing students and is tasked with developing and disseminating innovative curricula, instructional techniques, and products nationwide while providing information, training, and technical assistance for parents and professionals to meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students from birth to age 21.

Summary:

Plans and implements and researches effective instructional practices that maximize student learning; develops instructional plans/units that incorporate the national mission priorities of literacy, transition, and family involvement; collaborates with other educators on teams/departments to provide an effective instructional program; documents and monitors student progress; communicates with families regarding student progress; maintains professional growth; and is accountable for student achievement and safety, and engages in action research for continuous improvement of instruction.

Job Description:

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

I. Plans, implements and researches effective instructional practices that maximize student learning.

II. Ensures the physical and emotional safety and supervision of all students; assists with the supervision of students at all times.

III. Plans units, projects and daily lessons collaboratively with team/department members; incorporates activities into daily teaching that include student-centered learning, the KDES and MSSD student outcomes, literacy development, family involvement, and transition skills.

IV. Maintains high expectations of all students; including students who are from traditionally underserved populations – those who are lower achieving academically, who come from families who speak a language other than English in the home, who have additional disabilities, who are members of diverse racial or cultural groups, who are from rural areas, or who have unique educational needs; communicates class and course expectations to students and families (i.e. course syllabus).

V. Ensures that the curriculum is aligned with the standards and benchmarks in all outcome areas.

VI. Implements plans in the classroom by providing effective instruction that is aligned with the school improvement plan to maximize student growth in reading, writing, emotional intelligence, and mathematics.

VII. Provides instruction that reflects an understanding of cultural diversity and family needs.

VIII. Presents a program of instruction that is designed to meet the needs of individual students with appropriate accommodations for interests, disabilities, special talents, learning styles, and pace of learning.

IX. Establishes and maintains a learning environment that is conducive to student learning; establishes a nurturing relationship with students.

X. Uses appropriate disciplinary approaches with intent of teaching students appropriate behavior.

XI. Conducts on-going assessment of student progress; uses a variety of appropriate assessments, including standardized tests and portfolios, to document student performance.

XII. Analyzes data from classroom and school-wide assessments; uses this information to modify lessons and instruction to increase instructional effectiveness.

XIII. Develops IEP/IFSP based on assessment information; turns goals and objectives into classroom instruction; reviews IEP/IFSP regularly to monitor student progress toward meeting goals/objectives; provides quarterly reports about student progress.

XIV. Participates in meetings including, but not limited to, SRTs, IEPs/IFSPs, Back to School Night and school-wide meetings (school-wide meetings may last until 4:30 p.m. and teachers are expected to stay for the entire meeting).

XV. Communicates information regarding student progress to families; completes all forms/reports related to student progress to be sent home to families.

XVI. Maintains appropriate records on students, including attendance, grades, behavior incidents, progress toward meeting IEPs/IFSPs goals and objectives, communications with parents, and student meetings.

XVII. Adheres to institutional policies, procedures, and Clerc Center expectations, including compliance with work hours (teachers are expected to work the hours necessary to complete their job - minimally this is 7 hours per teacher work day); completes all leave slips and other forms in accordance with guidelines.

XVIII. Participates in Training and Professional Development activities; remains knowledgeable of the current trends and effective practices in area of expertise or content area; maintains professional certifications and portfolio (minimally teachers are expected to maintain the equivalent of certifications through professional development workshops and training activities); applies newly learned information to classroom instruction.

XIX. Provides opportunities for visitors to observe classroom activities and share information; provides training for practicum and internship students.

XX. Maintains a professional relationship with other team/department members, parents, and the community; works collaboratively with educators from various units.

XXI. Engages in action research through a spiraling cycle of problem identification, systematic data collection, reflection, analysis, data-driven action taken, and problem redefinition.

XXII. Proposes effective, innovative strategies which have resulted from action research to be disseminated to other programs and educators.

XXIII. Documents all national mission contacts and activities using the "Contact Log" and "Activity Summary" databases, according to established procedures and timelines.

XXIV. Works to support the Clerc Center mission in alignment with organizational priorities and the Clerc Center Strategic Plan.

XXV. Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.

XXVI. Demonstrates a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.

XXVII. Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.

XXVIII. Performs related and other duties as needed.

Specifications:

MSSD English Department – requires a Master's degree in Deaf Education or the English content area (if the Master's degree is in Deaf Education, the Bachelor's degree must be in the English content area or the candidate must present proof of state certification in the English content area).

Teaching Fellow:

Requires bachelor's degree in the English content, deaf education or education, have minimal teaching experience, be enrolled or eligible to enroll in a graduate program in the content area, Deaf Education or Education at any greater Washington D.C. area university or college that is accredited.

All positions require:

• Knowledge and understanding of child development and/or adolescent needs

• Ability to provide/implement appropriate instructional activities for secondary school students

• Ability to communicate in American Sign Language

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION:

• All employees hired must undergo a background investigation if selected for the job and must be cleared before starting first day on the job. Reports from Background Check and Gallaudet Conduct & Security Office must be in a good standing.

• Compensation: According to Teacher pay schedule.

• Hours: Full Day – 8:15am – 3:45pm
