Overview

JOB SUMMARY

The Veterinary Tech II assists with the management and health maintenance of laboratory animals used in a research and teaching environment. This position is considered essential personnel for laboratory animal care.

Candidates should have experience in veterinary care and anesthesia as needed for projects involving small and large animal surgeries. Primary responsibilities of this position are to handle small and large animals undergoing surgical procedures, which include preoperative care, induction and maintenance of anesthesia, recovery and postoperative monitoring. He/she will also assist investigators in the preparation of IACUC research protocols. Additional responsibilities include coordination of activities in the surgical core if needed to facilitate a smooth operation.

Basic laboratory techniques involving molecular biology, histology and physiology will be expected to be performed. General lab duties will include operation and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment, ordering of surgical supplies, and training of students, post-docs and research fellows.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Associate's degree in Animal Technology; or, High school diploma or GED equivalent and two years' experience as a veterinary assistant or technician in an animal-related field or similar experience in an animal research facility.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION

  • Driver's license valid in the state of North Carolina.
  • American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician Level or higher preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Under limited to general supervision, performs the essential functions of a Veterinary Technician I.
  2. Responds to notifications of health issues by animal care and research technicians and seeks resolution and communication with animal care technicians, research technicians, investigators and veterinarians.
  3. Performs routine veterinary care under limited supervision including administration of various therapeutic measures by IV, IM, SC, topical, and oral routes.
  4. Performs safe restraint and transport of laboratory animals and demonstrate proficiency in collection of diagnostic samples.
  5. Under supervision, performs minor surgical procedures as directed.
  6. Demonstrate awareness of and execution of humane animal care in compliance with the Animal Welfare Act, The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, USDA regulations, AAALACi guidelines and other pertinent regulations and policies.
  7. Provides oversight to the maintenance of supplies, rooms, and equipment used for veterinary care and treatment of animals.
  8. Conducts inventory of supplies, submit purchase orders and requisitions for equipment and supplies, and maintain controlled substances with accurate record keeping.
  9. Participates in the training program for animal care staff and provide guidance and hands-on training as necessary to improve their effectiveness, efficiency, and competence.
  10. Assists in the development of Veterinary Care related Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
