Summary

The Acute Care Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for planning, directing and coordinating the comprehensive pharmaceutical services in the inpatient area. Responsibilities also include pharmacy benefits management, teaching/mentoring learners, supporting research, quality assurance, and staff development. As a member of the management team, the manager is responsible for all inpatient medication distribution programs throughout this highly diverse teaching and research medical center.



Duties

Major Duties:

  • Pharmacy Program Management Functions (25-50%)
    • Responsible for developing, organizing, coordinating and managing all pharmacy aspects of acute care services, both clinical and distributive, in a highly diverse teaching and research medical center. This includes the ability to solve problems, coordinate and organize responsibilities to maximize outcomes in their program area. It also includes establishing program goals and the development or adjustment of operational plans and procedures to achieve them.
    • Responsible for the daily overall operation and coordination of inpatient pharmacy activities with all involved services and assuring the quality of services provided are of the highest standards with a focus on acute medicine and cardiology.
    • Inpatient areas of shared responsibility include, but are not limited to, distribution of unit dose, IV additives including chemotherapy, compounding and repackaging, and controlled substances for the acute care area.
  • Pharmacy Supervisor Functions (25-50%):
    • Monitors clinical activities in the acute care area performed by clinical rotational staff pharmacists and inpatient clinical specialists to include, but not limited to: patient counseling, patient education, clinical intervention activities, pharmacokinetic consulting.
    • Develops departmental competencies for staff and keeps records pertaining to competencies.
    • Shares responsibility for initiating Scopes of Practice credentialing process and Scope of Practice monitoring and clinical oversite.
  • Education (1-10%):
    • Assures that all necessary employee orientation and training occurs to assure continuance of high-quality services.
    • Assures all necessary documentation related to training is completed.
    • Collaborates with appropriate personnel on pharmacy training and development, to promote the learning experience and improve the performance of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy residents and students.
  • Research/Project Management (1-10%):
    • Contributes to research as assigned by the Chief or Associate Chiefs of Pharmacy.
    • Contributes to the evaluation plan of the MVAHCS Clinical Pharmacy Service as requested by the Chief or Associate Chiefs of Pharmacy. This will include evaluation of both process and outcome measures.
    • Participates in projects as assigned and as they relate to the practice area. When necessary, obtains proper approval from direct supervisor, regulatory bodies such as the Research and Development Committee, the Institutional Review Board, and other committees. Assists staff and trainees on project planning, execution, data analysis, presentation, and manuscript preparation and submission.
