Overview:
Saint Catherine Academy is a state-approved, private education school in the Diocese of Bridgeport serving students with developmental disabilities including those with autism, intellectual or multiple disabilities. Saint Catherine Academy is part of Saint Catherine Center for Special Needs. The Director of Education/Principal is the educational leader of Saint Catherine Academy and is appointed by the Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport based on the recommendation of the Board of Directors. This position reports to the Executive Director of Saint Catherine Center for Special Needs.

Objective : Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Director of Education provides leadership for students, teachers and staff of Saint Catherine Academy, communicating the mission of Saint Catherine Academy to all constituents, while meeting the needs of each student's individual goals and objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. The Director of Education/Principal's goal is to provide effective leadership in fulfilling and communicating the mission of Saint Catherine Academy to all constituents.
  2. Maintains and develops the overall educational program following best practices to meet the needs of the students.
  3. Understands and is experienced with working with students with a variety of disabilities.
  4. In consultation with the Executive Director, has the general charge and control of personnel and budget; the school's schedule and facility and is responsible for the school's enrollment.
  5. To act as the education leader of the school, responsible for its day-to-day operation: to direct the activities of the school's instructional and non-instructional staff in the performance of their duties.
  6. To function as the lead communicator of the school's programs, expectations, behavioral guidelines, and other information necessary to ensure that all constituencies are fully informed consistent with their individual roles.
  7. To observe, supervise and evaluate the faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum; to supervise the teaching process, and to review and evaluate the academic programs.
  8. To provide an orderly, controlled environment in which learning can take place and where a school climate is supportive of the Center's core values.
  9. To be aware of the educational, physical, social, emotional and behavioral needs of the members of our school community and to ensure that all services as defined by students' IEPs or annual plans are delivered.
  10. To coordinate and supervise all certified and/or licensed service providers and to coordinate other outside agencies as appropriate.
  11. To conduct regular meetings with faculty and staff which deal both with routine school matters and with the exchange of ideas on school improvement.
  12. Develops and oversees the process whereby staff continually advances their practice.
  13. To prepare a master school schedule and to assign teachers and students to classes and other obligations.
  14. To serve as a consultant to teachers in matters of classroom management, teaching methods and general school procedures.
  15. To maintain compliance with the CT State Department of Education requirements for private special education schools.
  16. To oversee the process for review and implementation of District IEPs. To act as the lead communication with District personnel in all matters related to the placement and progress of students.
  17. To develop and execute a process for the screening of qualified student applicants and for enrolling accepted students.
  18. To coordinate with the Director of the Adult Program as it relates to shared resources.
  19. To be an active participate in the Center leadership team to develop and implement the services provided through the Center for Special Needs and to perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications:
    • Must be a practicing Roman Catholic
    • Valid CT Administrator's Certification (092) for school administrators and certification in special education, school psychology or counseling.
    • Experience working in settings involving children with disabilities.
    • Public school administrative experience is highly desirable.
    • Excellent communication skills including written, verbal, public speaking and presentation skills.
    • Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills; must be a self-starter and be well-organized.
