Job Description Summary:
A Research Technician (RT) position is immediately available at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) in Kansas City, KS under the direct supervision of principal investigator (PI) Katherine A. Waugh PhD, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology.
This is a part-time salaried position with flexible hours of 1-10 hours per week aiming for an average of 5 hours per week. Salary is commensurate with skills and experience with a range of $ per hour.

Within this research program, the Research Technician will be responsible for participating in day-to-day lab maintenance and laboratory meetings, as well as assisting investigator/researchers with benchwork as directed by the PI. This will include but is not limited to expressing thoughts as a valued expert on Down syndrome during weekly 1 hour lab meetings, maintaining stocks of sterile plasticware, reagents, and dishes for research efforts, as well as assisting with laboratory benchwork (e.g., PCR).
Notably, the research laboratory is housed in a modern space with access to state-of-the-art equipment and will build on a long history of innovative service to the KUMC research community.
Job Description:

Required Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Work Experience: Extensive experience and familiarity with Down Syndrome.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in the Life Sciences, Communications, or a relevant field from an accredited institution.

Work Experience: Previous experience working or volunteering in a team-oriented environment.

Skills:

  • Effective communication skills.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Interest in science

Job Duties Outlined:

  • Participate in regular communication with colleagues via weekly lab meetings (1 hour/week).
  • Maintain stocks of sterile reagents, plastic, and glassware for research efforts. This will include inventorying stocks of pipette tips and Eppendorf tubes, washing dishes, and preparing all for autoclaving as described in more detail below (0-3 hours/week).
  • Assist in preparing reagents, plastic, and glassware for sterilization (e.g., washing, wrapping in foil, taping, and monitoring autoclave).
  • Assist all investigators/researchers in the lab on collective research efforts including but not limited to molecular biology techniques related to genotyping such as loading, running, and imaging PCR gels (0-9 hours/week).
  • Perform other duties assigned by PI as available.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
