Assists in providing direct and indirect patient care according to established procedures. Provides care for the adult, geriatric and pediatric population under the direction and supervision of an RN.
EducationHigh School Diploma or GED of equivalent Required If a student in an accredited school of professional nursing, must have completed fundamentals of nursing and one clinical rotation and have a CNA license. Required ExperienceLess than 1 year 6 months equivalent experience in hospital setting. 6 months equivalent experience in hospital setting. Licenses and Certifications CPR Certification Required and CNA Licensure Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesAbility to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of internal and external customers.Competent in Microsoft OfficeHIPAA polices on ConfidentialityClinical: Performs basic, routine and specialized tasks in assigned department, under the supervision of a registered nurse. Meets patients' needs (to include providing baths, linen changes, bedpans, water pitchers, feeding, etc.). Assists with ambulation, positioning, elimination, personal hygiene, activities of daily living, routine comfort measures. Obtains vital signs and specimens as ordered, and documents per policy. Transports patients and transfers patients between stretcher and bed, bed to chair Provides nourishments as requested and authorized by orders including distribution and collection of meal trays as needed. Participates in shift report, reports observations, and unusual happenings to RN. Maintain the comfort, privacy, and dignity of each patient in the delivery of services to them. Observes, monitors, and reports changes in patient's condition, symptom, reactions or behavior as appropriate. Rounds on all assigned patients based on established standards. Technical proficiencies include blood glucose finger sticks, peripheral blood drawing, starting peripheral IVs and performing EKGs. Remains attentive to the patient(s) at all times unless relieved of duty by the patient care staff. Uses safety measures for the patient and self in accordance with protocol. Assists unit staff in preventing patients from climbing out of bed by providing diversional activities such as reading to the patient. Notifies unit staff if verbal reminders and diversion are unsuccessful in distracting the patient(s). Assist clinical personnel in transferring patients to and from beds, wheelchairs or stretcher as requested. Reassures patient to obtain cooperation in a calming and professional manner. May be responsible for documentation of patient care flow sheet/observation record. Communicates with patients and encourages casual patient verbalization. Answers the patient's phone and relays messages as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned by the primary nurse.Technical: Supports work of the department by performing clerical and secretarial tasks Answers and directs all phone calls; takes messages as needed. Greets all persons coming to nurses' station, answers inquiries, offers direction and assistance, takes and relays messages, run errands. Organizational knowledge: Works effectively within and between departments Participates on inter-departmental teams and committees, communicating unit knowledge as appropriate. Provides department/unit with information and knowledge acquired during participation with interdepartmental teams and committees. Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff, supervisors, and managers both inside and outside the unit.Compiles paperwork and inputs specified computer data related to admission, discharge, transfer or expiration of a patient. Maintains patient records per hospital policy and reviews for completeness as needed throughout treatment (e.g. prior to surgery, transfer, and discharge).
