About the Job

We have an opening for a research scientist available immediately in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. There are two primary objectives for this position: 1) run a core tissue culture resource that services several projects within the PI's laboratory, and 2) serve a project manager for Cancer Bioengineering Initiative Lab studies that bring a diverse suite of advanced technologies (optical imaging, biophysical modeling, microfabrication, and genome engineering) together to answer fundamental and translational cancer questions.

The core function is to build microscale tissue constructs using microfluidic droplet technology and assess cell function in these constructs. Position responsibilities will include design, fabrication, and operation of microfluidic devices as well as mammalian cell culture and standard biochemical assays. Responsibilities will also include intensive optical microscopy and quantitative image processing. The candidate will be responsible for supervising a team of research scientists and for training new lab members. The candidate will also be responsible for interfacing with collaborating laboratories and coordinating experiments. The candidate will also be responsible for analyzing data, preparation of manuscripts along with the PI, and presenting results to the PI and at local, regional, and national meetings.

Job Duties

Wood Lab Microfluidic Technology Development (75%)

  • Continual assay innovation and refinement (10%)
  • Design and carry out experiments and analyze data (50%)
  • Train and support Wood lab members using of microfluidic droplet technology (5%)
  • Author, co-author, and otherwise collaborate on reports, conference papers and journal articles. (10%)

Cancer Bioengineering Initiative Lab Project Management (25%)

  • Collaborate with peer CBI Lab Project Managers from complementary engineering fields (genome engineering, microfabrication, and biophysical modeling) to develop basic team science project management tools and collaborative culture (5%)
  • Lead 1 - 2 CBI lab microfluidic droplet studies (20%)

Qualifications

Required: Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, bioengineering, or related field. Laboratory experience including tissue culture.

Preferred: Experience with 3D tissue culture, microfluidic device fabrication and operation, fluorescence microscopy, and standard molecular biology assays. The incumbent will be expected to demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills, reliability, organization, attention to detail, motivation, and ability to follow and develop protocols.
