Primary Purpose of the Position

The Merrill Library Coordinator oversees all aspects of Merrill Library, including access services, reference, instruction, and programming. As the Library's lead representative, they are responsible for outreach to the Machias Campus. The Coordinator works to align Merrill's services with those of Fogler Library (in Orono) by working closely and reciprocally with Fogler Library. As part of the leadership team, they advise the Dean of Libraries on Machias procedures, regulations, and needs. The Coordinator also consults with the UMM Dean and Campus Director on local campus matters and keeps them apprised of Library matters.

Essential Functions

1. Leads, manages, supervises, and evaluates the operations of Merrill Library.
2. Develops and monitors operational goals and objectives, to be measured by performance· standards established annually in consultation with the Dean of Libraries. Gathers statistics and prepares related reports, surveys, self-studies, and analyses of library services;
3. Formulates budget with Fogler Library Financial Manager that reflects and advances the Library's mission; reviews and manages the budget and oversees expenditures;
4. Plans for and implements enhancements to existing library technology; consults with users, vendors, Maine InfoNet, and UMS IT to resolve operational and technical problems.
5. Complements Fogler's services, including virtual reference, instruction, resource creation, and consultations, as well as joint programming. Works with the Dean of Libraries and leadership team to ensure collaboration and consistency across both libraries;
6. Selects and procures library capital equipment, including software and hardware in collaboration with Information Technology, to enhance services and library operations. Prepares and executes plans for equipment and facilities maintenance and development;
7. Seeks internal and external partners and funding sources, including grants, to advance the operations of the library.
8. In tandem with Merrill Library staff, provides library services of all types to UMM and community patrons, including lifting and movement of books and equipment as needed;
9. Actively communicates and collaborates with all UMM and community stakeholders, and markets the Library in conjunction with broader university marketing;
10. Ensures that ADA, EEO, and other federal, state, and university regulations are followed within Merill Library;
11. Performs other allied duties as assigned by the Dean of Libraries and UMM Dean and Campus Director.

Supervisory Responsibilities

● Establishes positive and collaborative working and mentoring relationships with all staff.
● Hires, trains, supervises, evaluates, schedules, and manages all staff. Delegates these responsibilities vis-à-vis student employees to other staff as appropriate. Makes recommendations to the Dean of Libraries concerning library staff appointments and terminations.

Budget Responsibilities

● Monitors and is responsible for managing and tracking budget.
● Supervises and monitors the library's cash drawer activities, including collection of fines, replacement charges, courtesy card purchases, etc.
● Monitors the use of supplies and recommends supply and equipment purchases.

Public and Professional Activities Related to Job Performance:

● Participates in professional development to maintain current knowledge of trends and best practices in academic libraries.
● Represents the Library at campus, University System, professional, and other external committees and meetings, as appropriate or assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Coordinator supervises all Merrill Library professional, classified, and student employees.

Reporting Relationship

The Coordinator reports to the Dean of Libraries (located at the UMaine campus in Orono) with a dotted line to the Dean and Campus Director of UMaine at Machias.

Location

The Coordinator works at Merrill Library in Machias but may require occasional travel to Orono.

Work Schedule

40 hours per week. Work beyond regular hours may be necessary (to include nights and weekends) to complete the requirements of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:


• Knowledge of academic library reference, research, and instruction methods.

• Demonstrated ability and commitment to providing responsive and innovative library public services; a positive service attitude in support of a diverse population and the wide-ranging needs among students, faculty, and the community; initiative; good judgment; and resourcefulness in pursuit of institutional goals.

• Proven ability to readily learn policies and procedures and apply them in a variety of circumstances with minimal supervision.

• Solid working knowledge of computer desktop applications, and the ability to learn and utilize a variety of library platforms.

Qualifications

Required:


• American Library Association accredited Masters Degree in Library and/or Information Science.

• Two or more years of successful experience in the management and supervision of staff engaged in service to patrons, including at least one year at a college or university library.

• Strong written and oral communication.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

• Demonstrated knowledge of emerging areas of librarianship, including the capabilities and future trends of service models, library technologies, and systems to maximize discovery and access to scholarly resources.

• Proficient working knowledge of computers, software, applications, and the ability to learn and utilize a variety of library programs and ILS.

Preferred:


• Cataloging knowledge and experience, especially original cataloging and metadata using current metadata standards, including RDA and Dublin Core.

• Experience with Open Educational Resources (OER)

• Experience with scholarly communications and/or digital scholarship

Position Type: Ongoing, Base Budget

Work Environment/Dynamics: Work environment is similar to most academic library settings in that it is a strongly public service position responsive to the needs of the faculty, staff, students, and other constituents including donors. The position will be affected by rapid changes in information technology, the employee will be expected to help monitor changes and assist in adjusting services.

Work Year: Full-time, fiscal year.
