Summary - Job Responsibilities – Activities:

AMSC has an opening for a Process Engineer for the manufacturing of oxide-coated metal foils for high temperature superconductor wire. In this role, the candidate will be responsible for sustaining routine production, troubleshooting when processes fail to meet their intended specifications as well as process improvement. Troubleshooting and process improvement activities require establishing process relationships between complex equipment settings and product performance. Such efforts will require significant problem solving skills based on a high degree of experience working with vacuum deposition systems, pressure monitoring, heat zones, and mass/liquid flow controllers, in addition to excellent analytical abilities. Day-to-day responsibilities include coordinating all aspects necessary for successful process operation including raw materials, gases and equipment. He/she will work in close collaboration with a small team of engineers and scientists and must be able to effectively work on a number of simultaneous tasks within a fast paced environment. The successful candidate should have hands-on experience running thin film deposition processes, as well as knowledge of manufacturing techniques for metal deformation and annealing.   

Functions:

  • Engineering oversight of processes and operation of equipment for annealing of metal foils and subsequent sputtering of oxide films in reel-to-reel equipment.
  • Coordinating purchases of raw materials and key supplies with external vendors.
  • Increase process and equipment robustness, ongoing process improvements.
  • Troubleshooting process and equipment issues as well as failure analysis of semi-finished product.
  • Development of process documents (Work Instructions, Standard Operating Procedures, Material Specs).
  • Preparation of reports documenting process status including SPC charts.
  • Support the commissioning of equipment upgrades and lead the associated process qualification.
  • Training and supervision of technicians and operators.

Education - Experience:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Metallurgy, Materials Science or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in manufacturing environment.

Required Skills, Competencies, Authorities and Training Needs:

Technical

  • Thin film deposition (PVD) – required
  • Hands on high vacuum systems – required
  • High temperature heat treating furnaces/ovens – required
  • Rolling metals or metal deformation techniques – preferred
  • Foil/web handling experience – preferred

Operational Experience/Skills 

  • Statistical Process control skills (SPC)
  • Failure analysis of materials
  • Troubleshooting equipment
  • Verbal, written and presentation communication
  • Microsoft office proficiency
  • Schedule work, coordinate resources and execute to plan
  • Purchase supplies, parts
  • U.S. Citizenship Required.
