The Health Equity Data Analyst supports health equity innovation and projects of Better Health of Maryland using data science techniques and technologies. In collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer, Director of Quality Management and the Chief Operating Officer, the Health Equity Data Analyst engages in all activities necessary to provide analyses of clinical quality, Medicaid patient experience, social drivers of health, community health, population health, and other health-related data sources, including (but not limited to) claims, encounter, clinical program data and SDoH screening data to conduct quantitative data analyses to:


  • Uncover subtle associations and casual factors by mapping data across multiple data sources and utilize data management techniques to interpret the findings and create reports related to health equity via a variety of databases.
  • Identify both system-wide, county-level and population-specific health equity trends and areas for improvement.
  • Conducts outcome reporting for Better Health of Maryland’s health equity programs using database systems to support performance improvement.
  • Utilize predictive analytics to identify the likelihood of future outcomes.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities Data Sources:

  • Learns, understands and becomes proficient in relevant Better Health and external data sources and systems including but not limited to claims data, electronic health record data and the State-wide Health Information exchange (CRISP).
  • Utilize appropriate data sources, definitions, and integration for analysis as appropriate.
  • Understand the limits of use for each data source as well as the differences between similar elements in different data sets.
  • Develop written and graphic presentations of information for Better Health of Maryland management personnel.
  • Using creative and adaptive thinking skills, designs and creates a wide range of polished, engaging, innovative and relevant reports, briefs, presentations and visualizations that present large amounts of information in ways that are universally understandable, easy to interpret, and communicate compelling stories to diverse audiences to inform decision-making and support quality and clinical service-related improvement projects.
  • Use software analysis tools such as SAS, SQL and data visualization tools to report, analyze and interpret healthcare data; provides data support and responds to ad-hoc requests for customized data queries, reports and analyses.
  • Participates in the discovery of innovative approaches towards Better Health of Maryland’s health equity mission, and the development and implementation of new data-driven tactics.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • 1 year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.
  • 2-4 years related work experience required.
  • Familiarity with healthcare relayed data (claims, encounters, clinical screening results, clinical surveys) Familiarity with common data science toolkits, such as SAS, SQL, etc., to manipulate data and draw insights from large healthcare data sets, required.
  • Proficiency with data visualization tools, such as Tableau to convey insights to disparate audiences, required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written, and favorable interpersonal skills are necessary to interact with a wide range of technical and non-technical associates, required
