DESCRIPTION:


The Staff Scientist at Soundview Consultants is a professional scientist with experience in fish and/or wildlife biology or geology or similar earth sciences. The Staff Scientist provides the foundation of knowledge that is necessary to Soundview’s success as a team.


  • The Staff Scientist I has approximately zero to two (2) years of relevant experience as a scientist. The Staff Scientist I is responsible for supporting the Project Team (i.e. Project Managers, Principals )
  • Scientists and Project Coordinators) by completing assigned tasks.
  • Tasks typically include the collection and filing of relevant project-related information, the collection of data, data entry and analysis, the preparation of draft deliverables (e.g., site maps, and reports) as well as coordination and collaboration with the Project Team.
  • The Staff Scientist I is responsible for staying current with best available science in order to be qualified to conduct field work with an emphasis on the identification and assessment of federal, state and locally regulated water bodies, habitat areas and their species assemblages and associations.
  • Ordinary high water mark delineation methodology and wetland assessment and wetland ratings training or coursework will be required.
  • The Staff Scientist I, have a fundamental knowledge of technical writing and can perform the tasks assigned.
  • The Staff Scientist I is expected to gain exposure to land use laws and land use planning, code review and analysis to support project tasks.


TYPICAL DUTIES:


  • Prepare first drafts of Wetland Assessment Reports, Biological Evaluations, JARPAs,
  • Technical Memorandums and Habitat Assessments following instruction and exhibiting excellent scientific writing;
  • Embedding “red line” edits from team into draft reports demonstrating attention to detail and understanding of context;
  • Research code and background information and sharing findings demonstrating analysis
  • abilities;
  • Finalize reports by compiling components into report body (ie: Appendices, Table of Contents, etc.), printing, binding, etc. with a professional finished product;
  • Filing, prioritizing, categorizing emails to ensure project awareness and overview based on the Manager's direction;
  • Submitting and tracking permits and completing other agency requirements showing follow through and competence;
  • Detailed attention to filing in digital libraries and physical files;
  • Prepare documents and mobilization for site visits and client meetings, indicating forethought and teamwork;
  • Assist in Fieldwork:
  • Observing and recording soil, vegetation, existing conditions and hydrology data (ie: precipitation data, tidal elevation, temperature, etc.);

  • Compensation: $24.00 to $30.00 hourly
  • Depending on relative experience, knowledge, and skills.
  • Eligible for bi-annual bonusing based on performance.
