Job Summary

As Mechanical Engineer on Crystal Group’s multi-disciplinary Advanced Program Pursuits (APP) team, you are responsible for product design and development in a critical hands-on role within the company. Candidates will solve hard engineering problems and communicate solutions through proposal responses to capture business and attain strategic engineering objectives. The position requires having a broad interest in all aspects of engineering and the business. You engage with product managers, marketing, and customers to define and refine design inputs, generate design concepts and prototypes independently, and perform meaningful and timely design evaluations. The APP Mechanical Engineer identifies optimal design specifications and works closely with internal teams and external suppliers to ensure robust component and systems design. Must have proven ability to participate in a team atmosphere, exhibit and create a sense of urgency and maintain effective working relationships and collaboration with peers, customers, and suppliers. It helps to be very curious with a lifelong passion for learning and making a difference.


Essential Functions

  • Supports immediate, mid-term, and long-term innovation and product design strategies. Provides expertise to guide product managers to navigate the development of new products and technologies.
  • Provides concise and well-thought-out input on technological opportunities worthy of organization investment and will assist with establishing product development timelines and balance priorities to ensure that deadlines and goals are met.
  • Efficiently communicates design concepts to support technical write-ups, proposal responses, and trade studies.
  • Work with internal or external design teams to generate product concepts, designs, rapid prototypes, and technical specifications.
  • Determine performance impacts and process change of new materials and designs. Evaluate prototypes for usability, manufacturability, performance, and quality.
  • Conduct risk assessment activities to resolve residual risk such as tolerance analysis, risk/benefit assessments, DFMEA, risk reports, simulated use testing, and others for products under development and post-production, as required.
  • Develop test specifications in cooperation with internal stakeholders and the operations floor where the product is built.
  • Work with legal to identify opportunities to protect product designs through patents, trademarks, or other intellectual property techniques.
  • Work in conjunction with the operations team to troubleshoot manufacturing processes and implement continuous improvements.
  • Lead and participate in concept generation activities, including brainstorming sessions.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of packaging techniques applied to high performance electronics for use in harsh and demanding environments.
  • Maintains an extensive understanding of metal parts machining, fabrication, and assembly processes.
  • Experience with manufacturing process development including fixturing and custom equipment design.


Basic Qualification

  • Must be a US Person (US Citizen, person granted US Permanent Resident Card or any individual who is granted status as a "protected person”)
  • Bachelor’s of science degree in mechanical engineering or related field
  • One to two years engineering experience in related field


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- includes physical requirements

  • Ability to use solid modeling computer-aided design software and product management software (AutoDesk Inventor and Vault utilized at Crystal Group)
  • Experience with 3D design, complex mechanical assembly design, finite element analysis, and computational fluid dynamics (preferred) Experience with fast fabrication techniques
  • Mainly a desk position so must be able to stand, sit and bend at various times while lifting and reviewing the computer hardware items
  • Must be able to demonstrate experience in multitasking to meet several simultaneous project milestones up to and including completion of several projects
  • Works well both independently and in a team environment and is willing to change priorities as needed
