Our client, a fitness organization, is seeking an experienced Fractional IT Director with a well-rounded technical background and strong leadership abilities to join their team on a temporary, potentially temp-to-hire basis. This role will oversee a team of three IT staff, assess team strengths and development opportunities, and bring advanced expertise in WordPress, eCommerce, vendor management, and compliance. This position requires a deep technical acumen along with a high aptitude for learning and curiosity, a strong presence in mentorship, and a passion for documentation and SOP development.


Fractional IT Director Responsibilities:


Team Leadership & Mentorship:

  • Lead and assess a team of three, identifying their capabilities, opportunities for growth, and areas to enhance their technical skills.
  • Develop clear objectives and set end-to-end goals for ongoing projects, ensuring the team can progress in their careers.
  • Provide hands-on mentorship and guidance, promoting a culture of learning and curiosity within the team.

Technical Project Management & Oversight

  • Manage a range of projects, distinguishing between those with ongoing maintenance needs and those with set end dates.
  • Troubleshoot new and existing website issues with WordPress (level 5 expertise) and oversee site updates and optimizations.
  • Ensure that all software licenses are managed effectively, with accurate tracking of active licenses and their expiration dates.

eCommerce and Compliance

  • Apply a solid understanding of eCommerce platforms (preferably Magento or similar), with knowledge of PCI compliance requirements.
  • Work alongside stakeholders to ensure compliance standards are met and assess potential risks in current processes.

Vendor & Domain Management

  • Evaluate vendor relationships, ensuring the organization receives the best value and service.
  • Investigate and manage domain issues as they arise, ensuring the company's web presence is secure and properly maintained.

Technical Acumen & Infrastructure Support

  • Possess generalist knowledge of DevOps (patch management, firewalls, cloud-based infrastructure).
  • Understand Ruby code and be able to effectively communicate with developers, although not required to code extensively.
  • Maintain high standards of documentation, creating and refining SOPs as part of regular duties.

Team & Process Analysis and Strategic Recommendations

  • Conduct a thorough analysis of the current team structure and workflows, identifying gaps in skills, redundancies in tasks, and potential risks in existing processes.
  • Provide strategic recommendations to improve team efficiency and reduce process redundancies, including the introduction of new processes, tools, or products that could enhance the team’s capabilities.
  • Present a go-forward plan that supports both team and operational growth, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and industry best practices.

Operational Excellence & Compliance

  • Conduct regular audits to identify and mitigate legal and compliance risks.
  • Document findings, present a summary of compliance gaps, and recommend strategies to address these areas.

Fractional IT Director Qualifications:

  • Minimum 10 years in IT leadership, with a track record of managing and mentoring technical teams.
  • Advanced understanding of WordPress (level 5), eCommerce systems (Magento, Shopify), vendor management, DevOps basics, cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Azure), and PCI compliance.
  • Familiarity with Python, Ruby, JavaScript, and basic scripting languages.
  • Working knowledge of cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure) and SQL-based databases (SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Knowledge of data security, governance, and PCI compliance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to bridge technical and non-technical discussions, and capable of presenting insights to executive stakeholders.

Preferred Skills:

  • Familiarity with BI tools (Domo, Tableau, Looker) and CRM platforms (Salesforce, HubSpot).
  • Experience in ETL processes and data warehousing.
  • Working knowledge of Unix command-line, shell, and Git.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and document solutions for infrastructure and software issues with attention to detail.
