Role Description

The Research Associate, Oligonucleotide is a full-time, on-site position based in San Diego, CA. This role involves performing routine and advanced laboratory procedures related to oligonucleotide synthesis, purification, and characterization under the guidance of VP of R&D and Operations. The Research Associate will prepare reagents and buffers, operate and maintain laboratory instruments, and accurately document experimental procedures, results, and observations in laboratory notebooks and electronic systems. Responsibilities include supporting process optimization studies, conducting quality control testing, analyzing data, and assisting in troubleshooting experiments and workflow issues. The role also requires collaborating with team members to meet project timelines, following safety and compliance guidelines, and contributing to continuous improvement of laboratory processes.


As the third hire in an exciting new startup, this role will directly contribute to designing, building, and refining the systems that will shape the company’s future.While not every qualification is required, a strong willingness to learn new techniques and contribute to the company’s goals is essential. The person in this position will gain invaluable hands‑on experience in oligonucleotide science and manufacturing as the company grows.


Qualifications

  • Experience with basic molecular biology or chemistry techniques (e.g., solution preparation, pipetting, reagent handling, and standard lab procedures).
  • Familiarity with oligonucleotide or nucleic acid work (e.g., synthesis platforms, purification methods, or analytical techniques such as HPLC, UV-Vis, or gel electrophoresis) is preferred.
  • Ability to accurately record data, maintain organized lab documentation, and use common software tools (e.g., MS Office, data analysis or LIMS systems).
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to follow written protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related scientific field, or equivalent laboratory experience.
  • Comfort with standing for extended periods, handling laboratory equipment, and following all safety, regulatory, and quality guidelines.
  • Prior industry or academic lab experience in biotechnology or pharmaceuticals is a plus.


Compensation

The company is still small and does not yet offer traditional benefits such as health insurance. The starting base salary for this role is $80–100k annually, along with a unique profit‑sharing structure that will be detailed in later discussions. We observe all national holidays, and employees have access to unlimited PTO, reviewed in consideration of production needs, which may be unpredictable at times. Fairness will always guide PTO decisions, and as the team grows, PTO management will become increasingly structured and easier to administer.
