Senior Manager Bi & Multilaterals – Washington DC

Reports to: Deputy Director, Bi and Multilateral

Location: Washington DC

Introduction:

Living Goods (LG) is a global organization led from Nairobi, Kenya, that’s dedicated to ensuring women and children don’t die from easily preventable and treatable diseases by providing high-quality, life-saving health care at their doorsteps.

For the past 15 years, Living Goods has partnered with African governments to ensure that community health workers (CHWs) have the tools, support, and knowledge they need to be successful and reach their full potential. They support networks of trusted CHWs to transform health outcomes for women and children and work to advance system change by partnering with governments to sustainably lead. Living Goods also focuses on ensuring CHWs are treated as essential health workers who should be digitized, equipped, supervised, and compensated—so they can make the greatest impact—and harness community-level data to transform health systems. They focus on treating some of the deadliest but most easily treatable childhood diseases, supporting women of reproductive age with pregnancy support and family planning, and ensuring every child is fully vaccinated. With operations in Kenya, Uganda, and Burkina Faso (and a small support office of 15 people in the US), in 2023 Living Goods supported more than 12,000 CHWs to assist more than 6 million people.

The position:

Living Goods is looking for an experienced Senior Manager, Bilateral and Multilateral, based in DC, to develop and execute strategies to meet the organization annual funding targets. This role will be responsible for securing new business and deepening and growing existing bilateral and multilateral partnerships in the US. The Senior Manager will play a key role in identifying and tracking relevant USG funding opportunities through advance intelligence gathering, partner relationships, and other resources, cultivating, and engaging a wide range of stakeholders, working closely with our colleagues across the US, Europe, and Africa. As well as developing global bids/proposals and supporting the country teams. We seek someone with a strong track record of securing significant multi-year and multi-million-dollar funding from some of the world’s largest donors (USAID, Global Fund, GAVI, WB, GAC, FCDO).

Living Goods has been very successful in fundraising, growing from $10M revenue in 2016 to $22M in 2023. We are seeking to grow the diversity of funding from a reliance on foundations and corporates, to more sustainable and larger pots of institutional funding.

The Senior Manager will develop and maintain relationships with funders themselves, liaise with the Deputy Director, Bilateral and Multilateral and other LG leadership in some of their resource mobilisation efforts and serve as the organizational lead for bilateral and multilateral funding portfolio in US.

The role will also play a key role in contributing/leading on organisation-wide initiatives related to bilateral and multilateral fundraising.

Responsibilities:

Secure new business – 50%: This position will have a significant focus on bringing in new funding to Living Goods. You will support the management to actively identify and monitor funding and partnership opportunities in a systematic manner, conduct pipeline forecasting and donor surveillance to track the release of procurements. You will drive global proposal development as the BD lead on specific bi/multilaterals, fully leading and owning the process from opportunity generation/identification, intelligence gathering, partner scoping, leading the internal go/no go process, action plan development, assigning responsibilities, identifying win themes, facilitating program design, writing, submission and stewarding relationships. You will facilitate strategy sessions, create supplementary materials, and roll up your sleeves to draft proposals and get creative about how to fulfil eligibility criteria to line up with our organizational strategy. You will also support our Kenya and Uganda BD leads with proposal writing, program design (collaborating with program) and partner negotiations. You will also oversee both pre & post award proposal processes in line with the organization policies.

Post Award Engagement10%: For proposals that are awarded, you will lead the hand off process, ensuring the implementation team had a comprehensive understanding of the project, ensure all documentation is appropriately stored in the knowledge management system, and all LG systems are updated with award information. During implementation, you will be responsible for leading report development, ensuring colleagues are well aware in advance of the expectation, deliverables, and their role. You may also be responsible for supporting other grant management activities as needed.

BD Strategy – 10%: Working closely with the Deputy Director, Bilateral and Multilateral and the wider BD team, the Senior Manager will play a role in the implementation of the Bi/Multi strategy, helping to ensure Living Goods is well-positioned with major Bilateral and Multilateral donors and potential partners, in collaboration with colleagues in advocacy, communications, technical and country teams.

Strategic guidance on donor engagement strategies - 15%. You will support colleagues across LG by providing intelligence and advice on strategies to engage with priority bi- and multilateral donors and proposal development. You will manage key relationships and build and execute donor engagement plans for bi/multilateral donors including USG and implementing partners at the US level. You will provide internal lateral coordination and tracking and will know the space in which Living Goods operates and advise on positioning to help align our work complementarily with other partners and in support of key funders’ priorities. This will include coordination with our Partnerships Advocacy and Communications team at global and country levels as well as BD colleagues in country teams and staying abreast of new policies, strategies and positions released by USG donors and leverage existing contacts to influence when possible. You will occasionally engage with relevant bi and muti funded organisations or donors in Europe too, but the main focus will be within the US.

Capacity building and honing systems – 5%: Contribute to the improvement of BD processes, tools and knowledge management including staff capacity on pursuing and managing bilateral and multilateral grants. You will work closely with the Compliance and Programme team in supporting and advising on other grant management activities as needed.

Relationship development and management – 10%. You will raise the profile of Living Goods by cultivating peer relationships with relevant implementing partners and donors, particularly in the DC area. Represent Living Goods BD interests at relevant meetings, events, and within resource mobilization or donor-specific peer networks, as it relates to bilateral and multilateral funding. Positioning with both donors and partners and leveraging networks to put LG in a favourable position for new bids.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of 6 years relevant experience.
  • NGO experience. You have experience working in global health and/or international development organizations, and with colleagues across different time zones, languages, and cultures.

  • Excellent networking and partnership building skills
  • Strong proposal development and writing skills. You have experience successfully leading complex proposal development across multiple teams. You have a sharp eye and can write about both broad themes and minute details, all while under the pressure of donor deadlines.
