Background/Overview:

Save Del Puerto Canyon is a grassroots group that formed shortly before 2020 to vouch for protecting several miles of Del Puerto Canyon and pre-existing plans for a community park from a proposed agribusiness reservoir project. For more information about the group and it's mission: www.savedelpuertocanyon.org. The group seeks to offer, directly or through partnerships with other organizations, opportunities for nearby residents of Patterson, CA and elsewhere to take care of the canyon and learn more about the natural history, Yokuts native culture, and other important aspects of this area. Additionally, the group hosts monthly trash cleanups along Del Puerto Canyon Road as part of the Stanislaus County Adopt-a-Road program. Ensuring that in-person and online events are potentially open to media publicity is an important aspect, and the group manages several websites, a social media page, and social media group. In order to maintain and expand upon all of these activities, the number of volunteer event coordinators who can plan and conduct activities for fundraising and community engagement in close communication with the leadership team needs to increase.


Responsibilities:

  • Plan various family-friendly fundraising and community engagement activities (ex. the monthly canyon cleanups, hikes, bioblitzes, tabling events, community meetings, etc.) in close communication with members of the Save Del Puerto Canyon leadership team (who are also volunteers).


  • Be able to attend planning meetings using Zoom that are arranged at various times by members of the leadership team.


  • Be able to take the lead in coordinating or assisting with activities in Del Puerto Canyon and Patterson in-person; potentially help with space/rental arrangements that might be needed for some events in close coordination with the leadership team, meeting with other volunteers, and engaging with members of the community. Possessing your own means of transportation is preferred.


  • Be willing to meet and talk with members of the general public and public officials if needed.


Qualifications:

  • Good communication skills and a willingness to interact with members of the public. Also, should contentious discussions arise, the ability to respectfully navigate such situations.


  • Ability to walk on unpaved surfaces and sometimes lift heavy items (for activities like the monthly trash cleanups).


  • Ability to use a computer or mobile device, familiarity with designing and maintaining websites and social media pages.


  • For helping with in-person activities: Ability to independently get to-and-from Del Puerto Canyon or Patterson, California from your starting/home location.


  • Preferred: Bilingual in English and Spanish.
