Basic Functions:


Provide technical coordination support for the Melt Shop department to include the development and refinement of operating procedures for the electric arc furnace, caster, rolling mills, finishing equipment, and all related auxiliary equipment, ladle, and the processing and handling of scrap and finished product.


Nature and Scope:


This position is primarily responsible for developing, refining, and communicating the engineering and operating data needed to produce billets and finished products. This position reports to the department superintendent or General Supervisor of Operations or Maintenance.


Although there are no employees reporting directly to this position, the incumbent does provide advisory and training responsibilities for other exempt and hourly production and maintenance employees. The incumbent should have a basic knowledge of metallurgy and an understanding of steel manufacturing and techniques used in the melting, refining, and casting of molten steel or modern rolling practices. The incumbent must be able to apply engineering fundamentals to the continuous improvement efforts of production and maximize the efficiency of the overall department operation.


The Process Engineer shall: prepare and/or review all data sheets, diagrams, and flow charts needed for the correct and efficient operation of the department equipment; receive/collect, interpret and extrapolate data from the production process in order to monitor current performance against established practices and make recommendations on how to improve efficiencies for the future; work in close cooperation with department supervisors and appropriate maintenance and operations personnel to insure correct and proper operation of all related equipment to obtain the desired production, safety, and quality levels as needed; and develop proper engineering information to facilitate departmental requests and needs for cost justification.


This position is also responsible for assisting in the preparation and completion of blue prints for additions, installations, maintenance and repair purposes. Prepare drawings and sketches for modifications of machinery and equipment and layouts on various systems. On large projects, works from design drawings, preparing necessary drawings to construct facilities. The incumbent assists in checking and verifying specifications and drawings for accuracy.


Incumbent must stay abreast of current rolling and melting technologies to assist with recommending changes to effect continual improvement in the production process.

Requirements:

Qualifications for this position include possession of abilities and knowledge as may be demonstrated by one with a complete college education in Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering curriculum, as well as 3 to 5 years of related work experience. The incumbent should have a basic knowledge of metallurgy and an understanding of steel manufacturing and techniques used in the melting, refining, and casting of molten steel or modern rolling practices. The incumbent must be able to apply engineering fundamentals to the continuous improvement efforts of production and maximize the efficiency of the overall department operation.
