Position Summary:

Veterinary Assistants help technicians and veterinarians with routine care of patients, including restraining patients, collecting specimens, running tests and collecting and recording detailed patient history from clients. Veterinary Assistants ensure cleanliness of the hospital, as well as kennels and runs. 


Veterinary Assistant responsibilities include:

  • Assist veterinarians with lab work
  • Clean, sterilize and maintain kennels, runs, operating rooms, exam rooms and surgical equipment.
  • Comfort and humanely restrain pets during examinations and care.
  • Assist in providing first aid to patients during an emergency.
  • Record detailed patient history from clients.
  • Relay pertinent information to veterinarians. 
  • Monitor patients during surgical and non-surgical procedures.
  • Prepare medications as directed by the veterinarians.
  • Provide assistance taking radiographs.
  • Adhere to hospital’s safety and wellness regulations.
  • Educate clients about preventatives, vaccines, procedures and supplements. 
  • Prepare invoices for payment.
  • Communicate effectively between all staff members and clients.
  • Admits and discharges surgical patients.
  • Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Basic math and writing skills.
  • Able to lift, push and pull a minimum of 30 pounds. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Veterinary Experience is a plus
