Solar & BESS Engineer

Location: Colorado (Relocation assistance provided)


Our client is seeking a skilled engineer with expertise in utility-scale PV Solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects. This position calls for a proactive lead design engineer to manage large-scale projects (20MW and above) and oversee all aspects of electrical design and quality assurance for these complex systems. The engineer will also play a vital role in mentoring junior engineers and ensuring design quality meets industry standards.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary design engineer for utility-scale PV Solar projects (20MW+)
  • Lead the development of comprehensive electrical design packages for large-scale BESS projects (20MW+)
  • Serve as QA/QC for medium voltage collection system designs, supporting accuracy and adherence to standards
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers to support their development
  • Apply extensive knowledge of inverter-based technologies specific to utility-scale PV and BESS applications
  • Develop collection designs that include single line diagrams, layouts, communication diagrams, power cable sizing, cable schedules, wiring diagrams, and compliance with fire, electrical, and building codes
  • Maintain effective communication with project stakeholders and actively engage in project planning meetings


Required Knowledge & Skills:

  • Familiarity with NEC, IEEE, and ANSI standards
  • Experience with medium and low voltage equipment, such as switchgear, pad mount transformers, panel boards, breakers, protective relays, inverters, UPS systems, DC combiner boxes, battery chargers, disconnect switches, and power cables
  • Proficiency in AC/DC cable sizing, ampacity studies, and voltage drop calculations
  • Expertise in short circuit and reactive capability analysis (ETAP or SKM)
  • Competence in arc flash analysis (ETAP or SKM)
