Medical Coding Speialist

JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/Objective
The Medical Coding Specialist is a position that will work within our software engineering department. This position will be assigned to a specific software engineering project assisting in the furtherment of the project. This position is an IN OFFICE position only.
The candidate WILL NOT work with customers, providers or other backend staff of a traditional medical practice or organization. The candidate will utilize their medical coding skills to work as part of a design and development engineering team dedicated to the completion of a software project.
Essential Functions
- Following set guidelines, audit medical documentation providing feedback to project team.
- Review medical records and documentation to ensure coding accuracy and compliance with established guidelines.
- Select appropriate codes using coding manuals, taking into account the type of service rendered, diagnosis, procedures, and any other relevant information.
- Assign codes using a computerized system or by hand, following specific instructions.
- Verify that all required fields are completed and that the correct format is used.
- Check for any discrepancies between the documentation and the code assignments.
- Keep up to date on new coding guidelines and updates.
- Maintains confidentiality of all information.
- Completes work within authorized time to assure compliance with departmental standards.
- Keeps updated on all third-party billing requirements and changes for insurance types within the area of responsibility.
Required Education and Experience
- High School diploma
- Three years of prior experience in medical billing and medical coding
- Knowledge of third-party billing requirements
Preferred Education and Experience
- Post high school courses in insurance billing, data processing and medical terminology preferred. Courses in insurance billing, data processing and medical terminology preferred.
