Fiber Engineer

Location: Birmingham, AL (On-site location) or can be based remotely from another part of the state
Duration: 12 months (Potential for extension or conversion to full-time)
Travel: Eastern, Northern, and Southern parts of Alabama (includes 80%+ travel, some overnight stays may be required)
Expenses: Mileage starts from the job site (unless it is more than 50 miles from your home office). Cell phone and internet access will be covered, with a standard reimbursement rate per policy.
Working Hours: 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM CST, with a 1-hour meal break
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct independent daily site inspections to monitor and document construction progress, including accurate and organized daily reports, photos, and quality control/safety standards.
- Understand fiber installation (underground and aerial), including splicing and testing specifications.
- Read and understand blueprints/construction drawings.
- Monitor work of contractors to ensure quality control and contract compliance for routine to moderate complexity projects.
- Oversee excavation, boring, hand hole placement, aerial strand, fiber cable installation, and restoration of work areas.
- Schedule work and inspection phases with contractors and agency personnel.
- Advise contractors of violations and recommend operational adjustments.
- Verify contractor billing and perform quality reviews of construction.
- Recommend changes to construction plans based on field conditions or cost-saving opportunities.
- Maintain project records, including daily diaries, materials notebooks, as-built plans, and pay quantity records.
- Prepare progress schedules, work orders, and monthly estimates.
- Manage inventory (fiber cables and materials) and assist with reporting in Microsoft CRM.
- Provide oversight during outages and sensitive network impacts, including on-site support and strand mapping.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years working with Fiber OSP & ISP.
- High School diploma or Associate’s degree required.
- Experience with Fiber Construction (not tower work) and familiarity with splicing and testing.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Visio) and other tools such as Google Earth, Adobe Acrobat, and field measurement technologies.
