Reference Librarian at the National Library of Medicine (NLM)

Role Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated full-time Reference Librarian to join our onsite team supporting NLM’s mission. This position will provide access to vital biomedical and health information across the country. This role involves responding to customer inquiries, offering technical advice, and contributing to our mission in partnership with the 6,000-member National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM).


Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond to email and telephone reference inquiries from researchers, librarians, scientists, medical professionals, and the public on medical and health issues using NLM resources.
  • Provide top-notch customer service support for NLM.
  • Triage and address information requests and questions regarding the library’s products and collections.
  • Develop and update FAQs, fact sheets, stock replies, wiki triage instructions, and subject guides.
  • Assist visitors in the NLM Reading Room (by appointment only) with accessing and searching NLM biomedical databases and reference tools.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Availability for a full-time schedule, Monday-Friday, with four days onsite at NLM and one day of telework.
  • Experience in reference or customer service in a medical/health sciences/hospital or academic library.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision.

Educational Requirements:

Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program.
