Tracking Software Engineer


As a Tracking Software Engineer for the Space team, this role involves developing detection, classification, and tracking algorithms from orbital and ground sensors in real-time to drive autonomous decision-making. The role supports the full product development lifecycle, from sensor modeling and data analysis to algorithm and software design, testing, deployment, and production/sustainment. It also requires collaboration with machine learning, computer vision, mission autonomy, operations analysis, hardware systems, test, and other teams within the company.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop robust and efficient C++ software for real-time tracking and fusion.
  • Conduct data analysis and performance evaluation to validate and improve tracking system capabilities.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate tracking and estimation systems with other system components.
  • Contribute to the full software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, design, coding, testing, and deployment.
  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in tracking and fusion technology.
  • Write clear and maintainable code with comprehensive documentation.
  • Build and maintain sensor models for simulation and performance analysis.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong engineering background in fields such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics.
  • 4+ years of experience building software solutions involving object detection, classification, tracking, estimation, and sensor data processing.
  • Proficiency with modern C++ (C++11 and beyond), including experience with STL, smart pointers, templates, and familiarity with object-oriented design and polymorphism. Experience with production-grade code deployed to robots is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Kalman Filter estimators (KF, EKF, UKF, particle filter) and their respective advantages and disadvantages.
  • Experience with target-measurement assignment problems.
  • Knowledge of methods for target cardinality estimation and track initialization.
  • Strong background in linear algebra and probability/stochastic processes.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and hold a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance (Secret, Top Secret, TS with SCI).


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Long-Wave Infrared (LWIR) cameras.
  • In-depth knowledge of multi-target tracking algorithms, including track-oriented multi-hypothesis tracker (TO-MHT), hypothesis-oriented multi-hypothesis tracker (HO-MHT), joint probabilistic data association tracker (JPDA), and batch-tracking algorithms.
  • Experience with both centralized and decentralized track fusion.
  • Experience with target track classification via machine learning/artificial intelligence.
  • Knowledge of nonlinear numerical optimization techniques.
  • Prior experience in the defense industry or developing systems for military applications.
  • Familiarity with software development tools and practices such as version control, continuous integration, and automated testing.
  • Ownership of software solutions deployed to customers.
  • Ability to improve products and scale mission capabilities to more customers.
  • Collaboration across teams to plan, build, and test complex functionality.
  • Creation and analysis of metrics for debugging and monitoring.
  • Ability to triage issues, identify root causes of failures, and coordinate next steps.
  • Ability to partner with end-users to translate needs into features while balancing user experience with engineering constraints.
