ROLE
This firm is seeking an Engineering Manager working on the Solar Engineering division. You will be responsible for review of PV and BESS projects design by providing technical expertise in the interconnection, construction, and assisting in the commissioning of distributed energy resources (DERs). This role requires an electrical engineer with experience in electrical infrastructure up to 345kV, including in-depth knowledge and expertise protective relaying and controls, experience on the technical and design engineering of ground mount solar projects of atleast 15MW and a strong working knowledge in applicable national codes including NEC and NESC. You will be hybrid and work closely with the Director of Electrical Engineering on department initiatives and process improvements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- position reports to the Director, Electrical Engineering and will work closely with Grid Integration Engineering and Design Engineering to design and commission utility scale PV+BESS designs.
- and review equipment shop drawings for switchgear, transformers, reclosers and other major electrical equipment.
- advanced electrical modeling to coordinate system protection, determine fault-duty ratings, calculate arc-flash hazards, and run step/touch grounding analysis.
- scope of work for 3rd party electrical engineers including but not limited to studies; protection coordination, power flow, arc flash, Step/touch grounding analysis, PSCAD and PSSE modeling, and substation design.
- the Grid Integration and Design Engineering team.
- analyze, and interpret utility pre-screen reports, System Impact Studies, Interconnection Service Agreements, and utility negotiations.
- test procedure review, code interpretation, protective settings development.
- of non-wires alternatives, selective curtailment, and other grid-edge technologies.
- and mentor junior engineering personnel.
- Project design reviews; review of single line diagrams, three-line diagrams, and site layout designs for compliance with code, best practices, and utility requirements.
- to RFIs on active construction projects as required.
- technical support to commissioning:
- medium-voltage equipment tests and factory tests.
- mitigation plans for non-performance to establish safe operation.
- RDB files and relay test reports.
- mechanical completion on construction complete projects.
- technical support to development, EPC, and O&M departments for the entire life cycle of a project including development, permitting, construction, and asset management phases.
- new product research and implementation, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and best practices.
- process improvements and lead initiatives.
- a high level of professionalism and ethical conduct.
QUALIFICATIONS
- years of electrical engineering experience
- years of PV experience
- License not required but preferred
- Degree in electrical engineering
- Knowledge of relevant codes and standards, including the National Electrical Code (NEC), IEEE standards for grid connected distributed generation and NESC
- Conduct power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, and arc flash analyses
- Extensive experience with solar interconnection coordination with utilities across various ISO
- Experience with capacity testing, record modeling, and closeout documentation on solar projects
- Experience mentoring and providing guidance to internal junior engineers or third-party engineering firms to promote a culture of continuous improvement.
- Understanding of engineering best practices for construction
- CAD and/or BIM proficiency is a plus
