Job Title: Exterior Component Engineer

Location: Irvine, CA


Role Overview:

As an Exterior Component Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing automotive exterior systems, focusing on components like glazing, side mirrors, and wiper systems. This role requires a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, CAD proficiency, and hands-on experience in automotive exterior system design and development. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and support vehicle development milestones, ensuring that components meet quality, functionality, and craftsmanship targets.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Exterior System Design & Development: Lead design and development activities for automotive exterior components such as windshields, quarter glasses, roof glass, backlites, wiper systems, side mirrors, active grille shutters, and B-pillar appliques.
  • 3D CAD Modeling: Develop detailed designs in CATIA V5, focusing on component integration, structural integrity, and manufacturability.
  • Vehicle Integration & Packaging: Conduct vehicle/assembly packaging studies, ensuring component compatibility and adherence to design specifications within the vehicle structure.
  • Tooling & Manufacturing Knowledge: Apply understanding of tooling and manufacturing processes to ensure designs are feasible, manufacturable, and cost-effective.
  • Engineering Documentation: Prepare and maintain engineering release documents, change documentation, and maintain rigorous version control.
  • Design Validation & Analysis: Create and update Design Validation Plans (DVP), conduct Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), and lead design FMEA studies to address potential design risks.
  • Collaboration with Suppliers: Work with external suppliers to guide component development, ensuring alignment with Rivian’s quality and performance standards.
  • A-Class Surface Feasibility & Craftsmanship Targeting: Perform feasibility studies on A-class surfaces, define craftsmanship targets, and ensure high-quality finishes.


Required Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 years in automotive exterior system and subsystem design and development.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in CATIA V5 for component and system design.
  • Strong grasp of design and development concepts for automotive exterior systems (e.g., windshield, side mirrors, B-pillar appliques, active grille shutter).
  • Knowledge in Master Sections, Vehicle Integration, Vehicle Packaging, and assembly processes.
  • Proficiency in GD&T and FMEA methodologies.
  • Soft Skills:
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the capacity to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.


Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in conducting feasibility studies, A-class surface validation, and setting craftsmanship standards.
  • Knowledge of validation processes and tools used in automotive component testing and verification.
