Speech-Language Pathologist in the Wardlaw School
Start Date: Immediate Availability
The Atlanta Speech School provides an unmatched opportunity to learn from both peers and experts in the field, and to contribute to the School’s growing body of knowledge. Beyond seeking proficiency, we work to construct a Deep Reading Brain for each child at the School and, through our Rollins Center for Language & Literacy, every child beyond the school. Deep reading requires learning to make connections between what we read to what we think, feel, and do. Through deep reading, children develop empathy, hone critical thinking, and go on to make the greatest possible difference in the lives of others.
· We believe in connection over compliance. Rather than silencing children, we teach them to listen - and to think, to question, and to solve.
· Our staff works together to know and serve each child from within an intentional learning ecosystem that is as joyful as it is rigorous.
· Our practices are grounded in structured literacy and built on the sciences of healthy brain development, language acquisition, and the construction of the Deep Reading Brain. This work is intentionally centered around critical thinking, empathy, problem solving and the development of executive functions.
We are committed to providing a community through which all our students, families, and staff show up safely as themselves and for each other. As stewards of this environment, it is our responsibility to ensure safety extends to every person, inclusive of all races /ethnicities, religions, genders, family structures, sexual orientations, and any other aspect of their identity.
The School has never turned away a child in need of services based on their family’s financial circumstances.
PROGRAM SUMMARY:
The Wardlaw School is dedicated to serving children with average to superior intelligence and mild to moderate language-based learning disabilities including dyslexia (reading disability). Children accepted into the Wardlaw School may exhibit underlying auditory and/or language processing problems that make it difficult for them to learn in their present educational setting. Our students are between the ages of 5 and 12 years old and are in kindergarten through 6th grade. Wardlaw School students typically have a diagnosis of dyslexia or “red flags” for the disorder. They may also have difficulty understanding and/or using spoken language, expressing themselves through written language, or experience mathematical disabilities.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Wardlaw School for children with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities is currently seeking an outstanding professional to serve as a speech and language pathologist in our multi-disciplinary, collaborative educational environment.
The Wardlaw School employs passionate professionals who strive to be leaders in their field and who are committed to excellence in the education of all children. Knowledge and understanding of research-based practices in the areas of language development, reading and math are the cornerstone of all that we do. We seek to hire innovators and thinkers who choose to work in an environment where they can truly make a difference in the life of a child. The Wardlaw School encourages all of its students, educators, specialists and clinicians to be engaged, perpetual learners.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
§ Plan and implement appropriate intervention for children with mild to moderate language-based learning disabilities.
§ Derive remediation strategies and goals from students’ psycho-educational evaluations as well as from diagnostic therapy, testing, and teaching.
§ Evaluate students as needed to further define language strengths and weaknesses.
§ Interpret language difficulties in terms of their impact on academic progress.
§ Work collaboratively with the classroom teacher to establish and implement appropriate language goals for each student within a class setting.
§ Provide individual and small group “pull-out” therapy as well as whole-class language instruction as appropriate.
§ Complete speech and language sections for two written reports per school year and participate in parent-teacher conferences.
§ Communicate effectively with parents and teachers.
§ Serve a typical full-time caseload of 3 classrooms (36 students).
REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:
A Master’s degree in speech/language pathology, ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence, and a valid Georgia license in Speech/Language Pathology are required. Experience in a school setting is desirable and a background or experience in learning disabilities a plus. The Wardlaw School is dedicated to ongoing staff development and provides opportunities for individuals to add to their repertoire of skills and methodology. We are looking for professionals who seek to be the best in their field and who enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative environment. Opportunities are available to present locally and nationally.
SALARY: Salary is commensurate with credentials and experience.
BENEFITS: This full-time school position offers generous benefit package including health/dental/life and long-term disability insurance; School subsidized health insurance premiums of staff and families; Flexible Spending Account; 403(b) Plan; accrued sick time; generous holiday schedule; and cost reduction of some Speech School services.
TO APPLY: Please submit all of the following documents to ensure that your information is considered: cover letter, resume, and written submission: Please describe how your particular skills, talents, and/or expertise could be beneficial to the Wardlaw School. (Please limit response to 500 words).
